Thought we needed a dedicated thread for the handful of us on AS that own these saws. I just picked up my second one last week, and spent a little time working on it last night.
I don't know that this saw has seen much wood. The guy that I bought it from worked in a small engine shop (I am guessing this was a trade in), and I believe the previous owner only used this saw for cutting ice. Very clean saw, needed my attention in a couple areas- but pretty trivial. This is a very fine running machine, and plan on keeping it that way.
Throw up some pictures of your 540/8800's fellas! Also feel free to add in shops or places that you have found discontinued parts.

I remember lusting after a 540 many years ago....

Here's a couple pics of an 8800 from last year. Have a 540 that's more recent, but need to get some pics of it still. Fun saws, that's for sure. Been thinking about doing a post showing a comparison between the two. Just never find time anymore.

Here's a couple pics of a 540. Bar and cover are off at the moment as well as the spikes. Couldn't find a new exhaust cover yet, so I rigged up a quick patch job.

I remember lusting after one 5 minutes ago! Gotta be quick, though. Volks man is ON any that come up. I thought I had an 8800 off Denver CL a few weeks ago. I sent paypal and everything. Then the owners brother came over and found out that he was selling off their dad's old saw. I guess pops died a while back. The brother was pizzed. The guy refunded my paypal, so no 8800 for me.

I thought there was a 540 in the "shed collapse thread" from JohnnyBoy1986. He did also, but there turned out to be none. Must have been a 410 in the pics. So who has my 540/545/8800?

You better be quick if you want a 540/8800, realllll quick. I have two, and fought for the both of them. Just keep your eyes peeled on CL, because if you can find one on ebay, they will bring a fortune. I think I will buy a couple more before I settle down and look for other saws haha.

That saw was on ebay and i knew it was too good to be true.

Not sure I understand what you mean...

Lesrub, I would LOVE to see a comparison between the two! Please share, as I need to figure out how to cool this thing down... Mine will be running pretty rich, and I am trying to figure out what I want to do with the exhaust. I can't help but think that a lot of the heat from this saw, is drawn from the radically designed exhaust.

From what I understand, it was designed by Solo- and manufactured by Homelite. May not be, but from the various Homelite dealers and obselete parts collectors that I have talked to, this seems to be the most consistent answer. May or may not be true, but would explain the "Made in U.S.A" sticker that is on it.

That homey 540 still runnin well for ya CSX? Looks like you won't have a problem getting rid of it if you have to sell.
