Disston DA-211.

Hello to all. Well I finally got hold of the fellow who I got the last batch of saws from, plus the generator. I finally ended up with the Disston DA-211 he had hanging in the rafters of his shop. She appears to be complete, has good compression and the fuel system is clean. I checked and cleaned the magneto and set the timeing, but the old coils are cracked on the outside, they fire but don't appear to be firing under compression. Tested the coils to see if they would fire a .100" gapped plug and no go. So looks like I'll have to order 2 coils from Grubb's Supply. Should hopefully have her going after the coils arrive. Same problem with the Disston DA-101 saw I have. Replaced the coil and she fired up on the second pull. The fellow said the DA-211's clutch was shot or burned up, but found she had a broken clutch spring, so hopefully I can make a new one for her. Everyone take care. Lewis Brander.

Hello to all. Well, ordered the coils and they should be here tomorrow. Mean while I repaired the clutch, sharpened and sets the rakers on the 3/4" pitch chain, disaassembled the gearbox to repair the automatic oiler ( replaced a check ball that was missing on the inlet side of the oil pump) which is now working fine and removed the old coils, so that they can be replaced when the new ones ge here. I've also cleaned her up, sset the points and timing using the timing gauge for my Disston D0-101, so that both cylinders are firing at 26 degrees BTDC or .111" before TDC. Fuel system was clean, but checked everythihg, She's getting her fuel, but the old coils are so weak they will not fire it. Crossing my fingers that the coils show up tomorrow. Daughter and grandkids are leaving wednesday, back to NM and hopeing to have her running before they leave so that the grandkids can hear her running. So far the youngest one (6 yrs old) seems to have the most interest in the collecttion of saws. The older one (12 yrs old) has looked at them, but seems not to have much interest. Guess that's how it goes. My wife has looked at the DA-211 and is surprised at the size of the thing and wants to know where I'm going to store it. Ha, explained that the gearbox and blade ass'y can be removed and hung up and the engine ass'y can be stored on a shellf, she just shook her head. Talked to my brother about a 2 man Mall, he told me about, so he said that he would see what he could find out. Maybe, with luck I can aquire that one also.

Well, got the 2 coils and the saw is now runing just great. Found some other minor problem, but they are all taken care of and she's a keeperl. A fellow sstopped in and I showed him my saws. He like me says the DA-211 sounds like an outboard motor when she's running. He also said that his father might still have an old Roots 2 man saw. Checked out Mike's site and not much info on them and no pics. Anyone on this site, have any info or picss of the Root saws? Also talked again to my brother abut the old 2 man saw he has mentioned. He said that he would check into it. Heck, trying to keep this roll going on these old 2 man saws. OK, talk later. Take care. Lewis Brander.

One more Pic:

Here's another pic of the saw running. She's running at a good fast idle, but you can still see the 3/4" pitch chain in the Photo. Will have to figure out what the chain speed is, but when the clutch drum turns one revolution the chain move about 3.25" on the bar. I'm surprised that she smokes very little on the MX2T oil at 32/1. When I first started her she smoked like crazy, must have been burning off the oil that was used when she was stored away. OK, enjoy, talk later. Take care. Lewis Brander. Just thought I'd add a note: the chain speed at 4,000 engine RPM would be 1083.33 FPM. Guess that's why they used the 3/4" pitch chain. Lewis.

Saws:

Hello Chopwood. This fall and winter I plan to repaint or touch up a few more saws and work on making more decals. With the price of gas and everything else going up, don't think I'll be getting any more saws for awhile. Will be watching the budget pretty close, but still waiting to get some info on a 2 man Mall saw and possibly a Roots saw set up as a 2 man saw. They will be the last 2 saws for me this year, if I can obtain them. Here's a pic of the saws displayed during our Seaway Festival Weekend. The Disstons, Homelites and the Homelite generator got the most attention. The rest got varying attention from there. Was great to talk about the saws and start them for those who wanted to hear them run. Take care. Lewis Brander.

Well, have painted the lancaster Six-55 and have taken some pics, but will post when film is developed. Next will be the Pioneer, 650, once I get the right paint colors found. Then, I'll take a break from painting for awhile and do some work on making decals. That will keep me busy during the winter months. Take care. Lewis Brander

Hello Datatwins. Along with doing some painting on the saws I managed to get the crankseal I needed for the old Disston D0-101, for the gearbox side of the crank. It ended up being more of a project to replace the seal than I thought. Had to separate the gearbox, then found I had to remove the cylinder and split the cases. But got her done and managed to save all the gaskets and didn't have to make up new ones. Started at 10:00AM and finished around 7:300 PM on wednesday. Yesterday I fueled her up and she started on the second pull. Needless to say, she didn't smoke as much as she did at the GTG and I was running her on some 24/1 mix. So for now all is looking pretty good. Going to pant up the Pioneer 650, once I find the right colors for her, but for now may start cleaning her up and at least get her primed. Will be working on getting more decals made up this fall and winter for the saws. Will be trial and error, between working with the computer, printer and a camera. Glad you liked the pics. Take care. All I need to finish up the Pioneer 650 is the emblem or decal for the top cover and need some small knobs for the choke and off/on switch for the Lancaster.
