I remember just a few years ago when bundles were 3.99 for .75cf, saw this last weekend at the local supermarket and just shook my head. I'm doing the wrong thing for side work.20160112_144106.jpg 20160112_144121.jpg

Your assuming people are buying it though which may not be the case

I've had a couple of convenience stores contact me for bundles because they found out I supply a few campsites. first, I just don't want to get any bigger than I am already so that leaves me out. Anyway, they have told me they retail out for $4.99 and their wholesale cost is $2.50 a bundle for a .75 bundle. Usually these stores are limited to shelf space inside, so have to make a display/sales area outside. Of the 3 that I have been contacted by, they have indicated that over 30% of their bundles walk away, thus the high margin needed, but, the reason they are even attempting to sell them is to get people to come to their stores and purchase other things. It must work, as I wouldn't want to mess with stuff that walked away or I wasn't cashing in on.

I have always choked aghast in amazement  from whence I first even saw firewood outside grocery store... so much $ for so little wood... and gone in an ash!... oops, I mean... gone in a flash!! and then they say use mfg'd fire logs to start... nothing like a near endless supply of firewood on a cold night just around the door at home. a couple of $50.00 - 75.00 fireside evenings and i mite think a chain saw and some scrounging mite look pretty attractive and fun. maybe the convenience stores will have to go the route of propane and ice suppliers... lock it up, til after the sale...

Wow...these Indians who get all the loans that the US can dish out, at hardly any interest involved, have nutz enough to tell you 'a third walk away, reason their high margin needed.' What a crock of chit...they simply want something for nothing in typical fashion. I'd a told Habib that's his problem, a third of the bundles walk...tie a chit eating dog the rack, lol, ...and pay the wholesaler (little man) a little more coin for his time, gas, expense, etc.

lol, and I mean funny! almost political here, but not quite! ;)

'ooh-h ~ Rah-H!'...

$6.99 a bundle (7-8 tiny little splits) at a conv store near my house. Whoever supplies the wooden rack that sits inside the store, can't keep it filled quick enough. I've stopped in there at 0600 in the morning, see a full rack to the top, drop by around 4pm to buy a cold beer, and ain't a bundle much less a stick remaining. And the rack will sit empty a day or two, and the cycle repeats. I don't know who's buying it, but they're wearing out that high dollar heat. And I've never seen a soul go to the counter with a bundle. If I could see who it is buying it, I'd take'em to my place and load'em a cord of split oak/hickory on the trailer and probably get $2K out of'em, lol.

I sell for $4 for 1 cu/ft, and the gas station sells them for $5, and the hardware store for $6. Hardware store sells at least twice as many as the gas station, but I guess people don't know the gas station sells the exact same bundle. I wish I could get more business for the bundles. That's good money and my kids do most of the work! (Yes, I pay them).

customer says standing at USMC615's, eyes those cords of wood... all in line, all in order, stacked true, plumb and square... as if waiting for the base C.O.'s morning inspection of the troops.... and he says... "but,

but are you sure it's real wood? I mean... at such a discounted price!! and all... you know, they say if its too good to be true, often it is... "

[memo: ok :drinkingcoffee: over, I need to go and be productive... not that imo this ain't! ~ lol]

the B. L. has left the building....

No Habib's here have contacted me. Only the English speaking Anglo Saxon's. Not saying anything negative, just want people to have the facts.

Well that is interesting. I could understand a few bundles walk away but 30% seems exorbitant. Most gas stations have video monitoring for gas drive-offs so if you enter their property, they have your plate on camera. You would only think that they would also throw a camera on the wood pile if theft is that high.

I know a few people who buy bundles and they have uniformly said the wood is green as sin and barely burns.

I see stacks n rows of it at the grocery store... I just cringe every time I walk up to enter and see it there... but I guess its the old game of supply and demand... much easier to pick up some expensive wood stix, than to buy a full cord, especially if u live in an apartment. wonder how long that would last outside? lol... then again about burning such wood, I am sure part of... if not most of why it won't make a good fire is the fire builder doesn't know the best way to build one, or set up hearth to ensure it. like all of you here, I would rate myself in the fire starting department as: Expert, very experienced! :D yes... despite my bullet-proof procedures, I have to admit... every once in a while... ol Murphy comes over and helps me... and he is soon run off the place!!! :dumb:

:dancing:

Guys, I live around HICKVILLE! Very small communities here. Reason people want to come to the campgrounds. As for cameras, well I only know of one station that has them close by me. I have managed to keep my business up with the park for 2 reasons, first is I process wood from inside the parks first, 2nd, it's always been dry enough for campfires. I may have to rethink my process this year as they are wanting me to bundle them as well, just not sure if I have the time and my kids aren't old enough to help with this task yet. I don't want to give it up, been using proceeds to fund kids college fund, haven't missed the money I put in for incidentals, plus the relaxation period I get away from whiners I work with all day.

I make a point, none of my oak goes elsewhere unless it has been stacked through at least two summers. I know my bundles are absolutely the best around here, the most generous, best wood (all heartwood, spotless, zero bark), heaviest, and with free kindling. I bet I could dominate the whole bundle wood thing around here if I went mass production with quality wood, but..no way would I beat the wholesale price around here, which is like two bucks from the big suppliers. So..I stay small and get more. The stores want cheap..meh.
