I recieved a call from a customer who I did work for two weeks ago. He was very upset with me stating I had over charged him and that I knew it. This took me by suprise because two week ago he was very pleased with the work I did and would concider me for future tree jobs. Turns out that someone from a tree hack company dorped by my former customers place to try & drum up sume biz. The customer said he had some work done recently by me. Customer said he told this guy what I charged and hack boy told him I riped him off since he would have charged 1/2 the price that I did. Now I know some of the local tree companies are in a bidding war with each other but I didn't think anyone would stoop so low as to go to a home that just had work done and badmouth the work performed or tell the owner that he got ripped off. . I told the owner that I stand by my price and didn't over charge him further stating that I would not have done it for less. I also reminded him that it was me who encouraged him to call around to get other quotes. That quieted him down a bit. He would not tell me who or what company it was that he spoke with. I thought it odd that someone can go to a job site were a tree has been removed and know exactly how much to charge without assessing the tree when it was still standing. To save face and keep the peace with the customer, I told him that I would grind the stump out for him at no charge. ( the stump was not included in the agreement with the removal). Big deal ... 20 minuts or so and another satisfied customer. Maybe! This ever happen to any of you guys??? What would you do in this situation ???

No.
(Yes, a complete idiot tried it and he managed to make me angry but this kind of complaint doesn't work.)

"Sir, I quoted you a price. You agreed. I did what I said I would do. How, precisely, have you been wronged? I am not responsible for other people's prices. I have to question a price quote on work that your quoter A. didn't do and B. can't possibly get stuck with doing for half of a realistic price since it is already completed. I'm sorry you are upset.(Pause to listen for apology then regardless of whether it is forthcoming...) Have a nice day."

I have done a few little freebies to try to please people so I won't jump you too bad Hobby but----It is a good thing to do for nice customers-it is a waste of your effort for Idiots and donkey anuses. They think either "See, he really did rip me off so he's trying to make up for it." or--"Hehe, I got free work from that sucker."

My thoughts almost verbatim.  But I'd also add a caution by suggesting the customer will not only think that, but they'll talk it to others.  Consider where that might get you...
