Found a Timberwolf TW-P1 on Craigslist a while back but didn't like the price ($1395). Called on it, though, just because. The seller was a pawn shop in southern Minnesota! The photos weren't too impressive - rusty beam, dirty and dinged parts, and some "farm-grade" welding done to add 'accessories'.

Just last week, one appeared on CL - 5 years old, asking $700 with the 4-way wedge option!! I called immediately but, of course, it was gone. Figures.

Tuesday (5/29) I called the pawn shop; still there. Was there room for negotiation on the price? Yup. I told them I'd be there when they opened the doors Wednesday. Drove two hours, looked it over, started and cycled it. Sounds OK, looks fit in spite of the modifications. "Thousand bucks?", I asked. Mumble, mumble, mumble. "Yeah, I can do that." And we did!

As best I can tell, it's about 7 years old - engraved with dealer's name and 10/06 on the frame. It needs an air filter, new log cradles ($110 + shipping; already ordered) and an engine oil change. Hydraulic oil looks and smells fine.

When the parts arrive, I'll have ~$1200 in it, which isn't too bad. A co-worker has this model and really, really likes it. Retail on the new one is $2800; dealer selling price is between $2400 and $2500. I didn't get a screaming deal but I'm pleased with the outcome. I feed an Outdoor Wood-pile Burner, so will run 20 or so cords through it this year - this winter's and next, as I need to build up a bigger supply.

This model has the commercial-grade Honda engine; a GX160, 5.5HP. Pump is the standard, two-stage, 11GPM. Cylinder is 24" x 4" x 1 1/2 ".

They advertise a 13-second cycle time but my guess is that's empty, as in, no log. It slows down a lot when the going gets tough. Co-worker says he's never stalled the cylinder on his, even with some gnarly, knotty hardwood. We shall see. I have the air filter and a couple quarts of oil, so will do some maintenance tonight.

May have some photos next week - got a busy weekend coming. Unless I get it done this evening...

Pics are available on the TW website, though; Go here click 'Splitters', then 'TW-P1'.

Congrats

Probably one of the best, if not the best of the entry level machines on the market. Had a TW-P1, sold it for $100 more than I paid for it when my wood orders increased to the point where I could justify a splitter upgrade. The TW-P1 is truly a stripped down commercial machine aimed at low volume sellers and pro-sumers. Yes, they cost more but there is value for the extra money.

Did you get the 4-Way and outfeed table with the machine? If not I urge you to get them as with the volume of wood you split they will pay for themselves in increased productivity. One mod I strongly recommend if the previous owner did not already make, is to add a hitch coupling to the motor end of the splitter. By doing so you can now move the machine without having to move a pile of splits out of the way. Simple add on, takes 15 minutes, a good drill, and a couple 1/2 inch bolts nuts and washers.

If you really want to make the splitting process more efficient and are willing to spend about $300, a Prince auto-cycle valve is very easy to install. I've done it for a couple people and they love it. My TW2-HD came with auto-cycle standard, and I'll never be without it again.

Good luck and enjoy the new tool.

Take Care

I guess I didn't get the wedge shown. It has a small - 3/4 inch long - chip but that's only about a sixteenth of an inch deep; the very tip of the cutting edge is chipped out. I don't think I'll bother to grind or file it, even.

Those Honda motors are the best. I wish we could make a US small engine that was as quiet and strong as those.

Pretty good deal ya' got there.

Good little unit. I've run one for a bit and other than being too slow in a commercial firewood setting I liked it. Do be careful of tough stringy wood because it will bend the beam and push plate before it runs out of power.

Me too ;-)

I've been looking for a used splitter for awhile. I repaired a roof after storm Irene dropped a tree thru a clients roof.... Saw an old beast of a splitter next to her barn, I inquired about it, she replied "I'm getting divorced, get it out of here" it's a old home made beast of a thing. I had no where to store it / work on it. So had called 2 friends who after much nagging came and dragged it out...the motor was seized, they found a used 8hp on Craig's list,, the hydraulics runs off a pulley so the engine runs at idle...still very long cycle time. Anyway with there being a 3 way ownership of the beast splitter, I was able to get it for 2-3 months to split what I had come down from storm sandy plus what I cut down after sandy.... Anyway it was picked up 2 weeks ago by one of the guys...... Sad to see it go ? At 1st yeah,,,, then my wife says your not going to see that again are you? I was like yeah it will be tough to get it back.... She says look around get your own!!!

So started the Craig's list quest!!!!so I saw the 1 TW in CT for sale... Little too much for a used I thought .,.,,, mind you I've been scouring all of New England..... Found a Timberwolf TW-2 outside of Boston on Monday am..... Texted back & forth with owner in the am, made plans to go on Wednesday am.... He texts back , might not be here, have other offers / interested guys.... So I said , if it will be there Monday pm, I'll come get it today (Monday) .... So I drove the 165 miles up , brought a 22" oak round to test it out on.... Met the guy, everything was legit,,( wife was nervous about me going alone, it was at his shop, he was cautious at 1st too when I pulled in, chatted a bit, hit it off and got to making the deal",,, the timberwolf Tw-2 is from 2001-2002,,, the reg tag had been off the beam for some time.....this guy was 2nd owner..... the splitter has the HONDA GX 240 engine.... And slip on 4 way splitter!!! The cycle time is so quick!!! So I agreed to his price of $1,500.00 . He tow strapped it to his skid steer and lifted Splitter into my truck, done deal.....

I back Up the driveway at home , wife yells out " hey is that a log splitter in the back of your truck? Or are u just happy to see me???" I replied YES & YES!!!!

We rolled it off with my ramps, fired it up , and split a few rounds with it!!!!
I'll post pics later. Great find!!!!
