Is not having a "vertical" component to it enough of a negative to prevent you from getting it?

I know that with the size of a lot of the wood I can get being 24" in diameter that if I had to lift it to split it, my back would be gone.

I know the TW can be purchased with a log lift but isn't it fairly slow? Also, doesn't that bring the price up in excess of $2500?

I'm just trying to work my way through the jungle of log splitter information and, the more information I get, the more dense the jungle seems to be.

If you have a lot of wood that's 24"+ in diameter, a horizontal splitter without a log lift is probably not what you need. I have put some 24"+ pieces on my TW-P1 and it is a lot of back-breaking effort - not so much the initial placement, which I can do with log tongs and my tractor, but wrestling with the halves once they are split. Most of what I split is 8-18" diameter so it's not that bad, especially with the 4-way.

Also - Timberwolf makes a manual log lift which I believe can be adapted to the TW-P1. It uses a long bar to provide the lift action, so it's as fast as you want to push it along. I think it holds up to a 500 lb log, and I was curious when I bought mine, I took a 'ride' on it with someone else doing the lifting, I am 290 lb and the guy lifting had no problem, there's like a 8:1 lift ratio. I didn't notice any flex or movement of the components. It is extra money and I didn't think I'd ever need it, but someone with a lot of big stuff might find it comes in pretty handy.

My pw-1 has the manual log lift. I have used it many times & It works very well. I have lifted 24" oak rounds with it. No it wasnt "easy", but alot easer then the heave ho method.

I work around it.

Actually NOT having the "vertical" component is exactly WHY I bought the TW-P1. I don't like the idea of having to hammer stuck rounds off a wedge mounted on the ram. . . with a horizontal like the TW-P1 that never happens. If a peice gets hung on the wedge, the next piece merely pushes it through. Doesn't slow you down - - and you don't have to beat the crap out of your splitter with a sledge to remove a stuck piece.

Look - use that great MS361 with the 20" bar you own to halve or quarter those large rounds into somethimg more manageble. It'll do it no problem - I know, I used to own one. No sense killing your back. I don't lift much more than 18" rounds.

The way I looked at it was it was much better to lift an occasional larger round onto the TW-P1 than it was to spend the whole day kneeling on, or bending WAAAYY over to the ground to wrestle large rounds through the mud and dirt into place using a vertical splitter.

Buy the TW-P1. You won't be dissapointed.

Good luck - - - Al

+1

Noodle those big chunks and don't kill yourself

Take Care

I can say I bought because I did not like the vertical option. Every time I use the splitter I am impressed and would not hesitate to buy another.
