Just for curiosity. How does everyone time their cuts?

Do you call over a neighbor. Get the wife?

I was cutting medallions the other day, trying to perfect technique, but I have no way of knowing the times I was cutting. I don't have anyone that I could call to time me. Any suggestions?:(

one mississippi, two mississippi...

Seriously, I haven't ever attempted solo cutting/timing either, and we both should be even more deliberate when working alone. I can think of a couple of methods off the top of my head, however.
Video record yourself and time it later (might not be exact, but should be close enough for comparative purposes within a session)
Rig a foot switch of some type to start and stop or record "lap" times with a stopwatch (probably less than completely safe)
Hold a stopwatch with your fingers on the other side of the front handlebar from your palm (squeezing it to the handlebar?) (perhaps somewhat more safe than the foot method, if for no other reason than all your attention is upon your hands/saw)

I'm way too tired and need to get back to bed, but I just couldn't resist the smart-aleck answer :)

I tape digital video then log the timeline on the PC. This gives a frame by frame playback with an accuracy of about .033 seconds.

Need new timing system.

Wife is becoming tired of this...... accused her of skewing resuts just to frustrate me....... pouting now! Sheesh.

Thanks for the response!

The only problem I see with a video camera, is that by the time I firgure out which cut was the fastest, I won't remember why.

I have another question now. How are cuts timed at events? On the loggers challenge series and also the Stihl shows, more than one competitor cuts at one time. If multiple indivuals timed the cuts then there should be a discrepancy due to different reaction times. Does this make sense to you?

Who timed Clearwater?

Yeah I've been wondering the same thing I need to time a few cuts this coming week with my PP385XP but I don't have a video camera only thing I have is a stop watch??What do you think I should do have someone else run the watch??

Later Rob.

I have my daughter time it with a cheap digital stopwatch my son has. I tell her to start when she sees a chip coming out of the cut and stop when the medallion starts to fall. We have not done a lot of it but it works ok for us. She gives me a funny look when I hand her the hearing protectors but she puts them on and I tell her to stand quite a ways away in line with the log to keep her safe.

doug,
i remember that day with lambert. he was competing against my son and his bobthebuilderized saw. my son beat the pants off lambert(now you know why john does that).
