I have taken bigger ones out of Detroit Diesels, but in that case it was too much starting fluid. The Frenh fellows in the camp used to call the cans "Holy Water"!

Hi Crofter. I took a rod out of a 970 Case Tractor like that once also. Apparently the head gasket leakid antifreeze into the cylinder and when the owner tried to start her on either all sorts of stuff happened. Bent the rod, bent the crank and warped the block. Had to have the crank straightened and the block linebored. Would have been cheeper to get a shortblock. Talk later. Lewis.
 
I've never seen that before, though I've seen lawnmower engine rods break for no apparent reason. but never have I seen one bend like that.
 
Most of the rods that break in the middle were from lack of lube or over revving. The lack of lube scenerio is as follows, the big end starts to sieze to the crank and continued operation work hardens the rod to the point of failure. Over revving leads to rod failure where the piston becomes so heavy at speed that the rod snaps when the crank tries to pull the piston down for the intake stroke. The piston comes to a dead stop at the top and bottom of its travel then has to accellerate rapidly make the trip up or down the bore. Top fuel cars usually put such a pounding on the rods that the rods get too short!
 
I have seen a rod on a John-Deere A bent like that,and an A JD,has a massive rod,runs a tad lower in rmp,than the Mac.:D
 
Al how in the world did that happen? Water in the cylinder? Those are beefy rods, but I guess, if you consider the piston and crank size, they're not so big:D Take it easy.

Cylider half full of gas,tried to pull start it.It also cracked the head,gasket held,go figure:confused:
