Hello All,
First time poster, long time viewer.
I am the proud owner of an ancient 028WB that will not die. In spite of that, I am going to purchase a new saw soon so I may better wage war on my newly aquired 44 acre wood lot. I'm pretty sure the new machine will be a MS361 with 20" bar. I'm looking for the best universal soldier saw and I think that may be it (opinions?).
Does anybody here have experience with or opinions on the QS quick stop version of this saw that stops the blade when the throttle hand is removed?
Thanks for input.

This very topic came up not long ago. If you do a search or flip back a few screens you will find it.

Most agree that the QS is a homeowner/novice feature that is unnecessary and unduly complicates things. I would not want one, that's for sure. I don't see it adding any real benefit and do see it adding a lot of annoyance.

Assuming that a 60cc/20" combo is appropriate for your trees, the 361 seems to be widely respected and would be among the top contenders in that size range.

I've come to the conclusion that if a homeowner comes here asking about a safety feature such as the Stihl QS, then he is typically the type of person who would gain the most benefit from such a feature. I suggest that you get it.

Perhaps if more people are talked out of it on 361's Stihl will do away with it on that saw... I just don't understand it on a 361...

Maybe it would have made more sense on a 290 since thats the saw they sell most successfully to homeowners. (They sure tried to sell me a 290).

I believe the 'pro' sticker on the 36X series saws by stihl is a marketing gimmick designed to lure homeowner type customers into paying almost 2X as much money, for not much more saw.
So why not put homeowner features on this saw? I'm suprised it doesn't have the easy2start system yet.

the 361 is listed as a 'pro' model in stihl's books, regardless of sticker

Never heard of the QS feature before but all I know is that the chain on my saws stops when the motor is idleing. This QS feature sounds like the same deal on the Honda ride on lawn mower. If you raise your ass off the seat a switch cuts the engine. INCREDIBLY ANOYINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS I used a bit of scotch tape to disable the so called feature.

It was made to meet the requirements of CA state... for one of their big purchase contracts. They did the same for the MS360.

You almost never see them unless in CA, and even then, very rare.

I don't find them all that obtrusive after using it for a short while, but I sure wouldn't want it on my saw. Sure will wear the brake band/clutch drum in a hurry.

Wow Skwerl, you make me ashamed to be a homeowner asking a question :)

They already have that. It's called diamonds and shopping sprees.

That only last a couple of hours. Then the money is gone, susequently you have to hear about how beautiful the diamonds are and the neat leather couch that we haven't a clue how we survived without that costs 5 grand, OH but its on sale for $500 off. Yea what a savings! There goes my next five saws! And on and on.:censored: :bang: :blob2:

Well said!!!

Here is another QS ?? tread.

The idea behind this design was so the operator could just release the handle and the chain would be securely stopped while walking from one area to another, without having to manually activate the chain brake, and then reset it when ready to resume cutting. Some pro operators like that and some don't. The 361 is considered a pro unit due to magnesium split crankcase, easy off 4 bolt cylinder, and it has a 4 port cylinder compared to the 360 which was a 2 port design. The 4 port lowers emissions, but in doing that it increases efficiency. If the fuel isn't being wasted due to scavenge loss, then it is being burned providing performance.
