My 3120 is a 1990 model, and somebody before me took the carb off, put it back on without the gasket , which (supposedly) created a pressure differential problem. (?) the crank bearing gave up, and the piston and cylinder took a hit when it all let go.
I had been running it for months, and had no problems. I cut some really big logs into loadable blocks, bucked some huge trees, and never noticed anything out of the ordinary.
Til it cut off one day, that is.
sure left a bad taste in my mouth about buying used saws.

My question is; could this saw be resurected through the miracles of modern hot saw technology?

Or should I throw it in on the deal for a new one.

Depends on what damage was done. If the crank and crankcase is salvageable, a new piston and jug would not be too bad. I think a new crank would push it into the graveyard tho...

Is it all apart now?

The saw is in pieces on a bench in a husky shop. (ed nelson, formerly with husqvarna). I don't think the damage was too severe, I'll have to check. I'm thinking dennis might be able to wave his magic wand.........

I'd be a little more generous with the repair limit. If a new 3120 is 1,200.00 bucks and yours can be professionally resurected for say 500 then I'd call that a bargain. Have pistion and cylinder installed, have the carb rebuilt and maybe new crank seals.

Sit down for this: I was quoted $1100 for a rebuild, and $1400+ for a new one.
Welcome to Northern Virginia.
Dennis is sounding good, I'm going to do a serious road trip and get a real bada** saw just to pi** off my wife.( she just don't understand, a man needs that much horsepower!)

You can get a brand new 3120 from CCD for $1100 and change depending on the bar. Since you have a bar and chains already, maybe you could go powerhead only if a rebuild is out of the question. Russ

You said that the crank bearing gave up.Was it a side bearing or was it the rod bearing.
Parts for the 3120 are rather on the high side but I think that 1100.00 for a rebuild is robbery.I can sell you a new one for that price.
300.29 Cyl kit with piston and rings
218.34 crank kit with bearings
518.63
You will also need gaskets, seals and a carb kit.
Even if you come up with 600.00 in parts, that leaves about 500.00 for his labor? I wish I could get 1/2 of that for a rebuild.

Whether or not you can get the rebuild done chea[er elsewhere,
A missing gasket and bearing failure would make me strongly
suggest a new saw, as you might get off a little cheaper by
rebuilding, you will have better long term results by at least going with the new powerhead.
