When I first got my ms 361 used a week ago one of the bolts broke off in the cylinder I took it back to the guy and he helped me fix it. I got out and used it today and the bolt fell back out I guess it needed a bigger bolt. I talked to him and he said he would trade me a ms 440 with a 36 in bar and a 25 in bar for the saw plus I would need to give $100.00. Do you all think it would be worth it I looked at the saw before and it seemed nice it had a 36 in stihl bar. Which I know is over kill but would you all give $480.00 for the saw. It is a newer model with a decompression valve and all. I would sell the 36 in bar off of it because I have no use for the bar and chain I already have 2 36 in bars. Also how much do you think I could get for it it is in decent condition with alot of paint left on it and a decent skip tooth chain. Thanks

I think it`s a buyer`s market on the used bar, in other words, you probably wouldn`t get much for it.

I`d offer the guy $435, maybe go up to $450 for the 440 and 25" bar if the saw is really pristine. I`m curious what anyone else would pay for a used 440.

The problem is he won't budge on the price. I sayed I didn't want the 36 in bar and he said tha he wouldn't seperate it. So Im in between a rock place. It not a bad looking saw it does not appear to have that many hours on it.

OK, I`m going out on a limb here Dan and this is only my opinion what the 440 is worth without seeing pictures.

The 440, if in really good, low hours condition might bring $500 retail and it should have atleast a two week warranty against hidden defects. The 36" bar and chain combo doesn`t sound as good as the saw and there is a much smaller market for such a set up in Virginia which lowers it`s value further. I`d say that you would be doing well to get $40 for it.

So if your best option to get out of this 361 that gave you trouble is this trade, you aren`t getting cheated but you aren`t getting a smokin' deal either. It`s a good deal if my assumptions about the condition of the saw are accurate. If you can get rid of the 36" b&c for $40, you`ll have $440 into the saw, right?

You know what the 440 is like to operate, you know it`s a great saw if the condition is good.

Yeah, what he said.

Since you already bought the 361, the decision is whether to spend $100 to trade up to the 440. I would check out the 440 to make sure it doesn't have any hidden problems. Run it hard and see what happens. Have a mechanic look at it. If it checks out, take it. If the 440 is shot, you have to have the 361 repaired.

There might be a cheap fix for the 361, like a thread insert, but probably not. More likely the guy is going to find somebody else to take it off his hands.

I don't think the guy is trying to get it off his hands he is into the auction business and goes around and gets stuff and reselles it. So far he has been really helpful to work with he is alot better then some of the people i have delt with. I liked my ms 440 that i had before so I will probably go with it and sell the 36 in bar and put the 28 in bar i got on it.

I went and got the saw because of the problem i had with the 361 he threw in two almost new 25 inch chains. I took the saw out and ran it it ran good. So for $480.00 I got the saw a 36 in bar and chain almost new and a used not as good as the 36 in but still work able 25 in bar with two good chains. I can feel the weight difference in between the 361 and the 440 thats for sure.
