ok, i am new to climbing but i have plenty of tree work related exp. considering i started at 12 for my dad who owns his tree company. anyways... i was wondering is it easier to climb all the way up a tree then come back down and start cutting limbs. or just bucking up and cutting till your at the top?

we have had many climbers come and go through the years and everyone does it differently. so which is the best?

BTW we do a lot of removals so we use spikes all the time.

it all depends if its a straigth foward pine tree ill just limb it up and my way up and chunk wood on the way down.

if ima have to rig pieces out and actully dismantle a tree ima tie in but remember try not to tie in and rig out of the same leader.

On the evergreens around here I limb on my way up, leaving about 10-15% of the branches at the top with a third sliced out. I drop the top through that opening. Remove the last branches and then section it down. I will use this if everything has to be rigged and also on cut and bomb jobs.

Main reason for the ring of branches is to control sway and leave the top stronger for rigging. Also the top of the pole is so small that spiking is hard because your spikes are set about 4-6" apart. Those branches give you lateral leverage points.

On a couple of them I have just dropped in sections with the branches on. It works ok if you have the room, but is harder to clean up.

You have to look at a take down as a whole project. It is really easy for the climber to start dropping stuff and then you have a mess on the ground that slows the job down.

Just some thoughts.

The answer is in your question. Everyone does it differently because every job is different. The tree, crew, equipment, and the dropzone all factor into the way I do a takedown.

thanks for the help, also i was wondering if you do tie in at the top having spikes on is it easy just to pull your self up, or buckstrap up and adjust your slack?

yikes!
one or more of the ground crew need some education in "struck-by's"!
a few of those had me worried there.phew! id be steaming a couple times there if i where the climber lol.

see video time 3:10 for example.:jawdrop:

I saw that the first time too, but when it came and thumped the trunk it would'a been cool with me. The rope man there is Greg Good, I can tell by his yellow helmet and the way he stands. He could educate all of us on a few things :)

You also have to consider that the climber had other rig points to choose from, but used one that swung the load back towards him.

In these situations I have used a tag line as a temporary redirect belayed from the ground and run over a limb slightly higher then the tieoff.

7 guys and alot of wasted time roping crap that i woulda bombed.

Musta been a training day.

Good job though.

Probably a demo vid for the GRCS, but I often find that a quick rig will facilitate easier handling by the ground crew; especially when there are two climbers and big wood. Could be some pavers or plant material that they do not want big wood hitting.

Comments section they said they had sprinklers and some other stuff they didn't want to break.

you know anything with GFB in it is going to be good. you know it.

the only problem i saw was the occasional big rustle up top with the shimmy of the tree but hey some of thats to be expect when rig'n out bigger chunks of wood and some of them larger tops they popped.

personally every once in a while i kinda like barebacking a tree like that with someone else doing their own thing on the other side but sometimes though when 2 go on 1 tree there might be one rope too many in the tree and it can ruin some else's swing of the limb. as long as you got trust for the other guy in the tree it can be a real good time. it's nice to hear a 200t duet aloft.

i gotta get mr beranek's videos, all of them.

We call it tag teaming over here, and sometimes it is nice to have some one higher up to set the rigging for you on the big uprights.

Oh, man, Justin I would love to run with you in a bigass tree one day.

I would spank that yankee arse fer sure.:buttkick: but leave the barebacking part out, I only practice safe removals.:hmm3grin2orange:

Oh good, dirty's gonna get a spank'n.

Dirty shoulda seen me the other day doing some dead wooding in a huge red oak. Using redirects to get out to the tips and the hitch climber to maneuver. It was a beautiful thing. Next time up I will try to clean up the top branches.

Sorry Skeeter for using your thread for my pleasure. :greenchainsaw:

Can we get a vid of the "spank'n?

lol. you wish man.

we get in that tree together and i'll show what the combination of power, grace and thought can do. you might be able to squirrel you way out to them tips but i'm cutting out tops and doing curls with them!! lol

although i gotta admit hanging off an 08 38ton altec on the biggest international chassis they got sure does have its perks!

did i mention grapple chipper?

i'm gonna keep it secret but you gotta see the way we doing too. real slick and i gotta say i like it. alot.

lifes good when you got 127ft of stick and good for around 2k at a 100ft. lol.

did i mention the amount of mix my climbing saw (372xp 20in bar) is going through? i make every cut to get the wood to the grapple. life is good.

who knew that saw fumes were an anti depressant? lol.

in all seriousness though bro, we gotta see where the next big storm takes us because these guys chase it. maybe we get it together. show you how these north eastern boys "bareback" a tree. lol

stay safe man.

spoken like a true teenager! I do like to party with them whippersnappers, though, they can pull the honeys in for the old man to dance with.

and then they are mine. :kilt:
the honeys, that is. I already owned the chillrens.:hmm3grin2orange:

thats great bob. i think its awesome the strides youve made since you first got into it.

nothing like hanging around in the tree huh? the views, the quiet, you focusing in on your moves. it might not be as good as a lovely woman but sometimes when the tree is doing all that you want its close.

best gig around, climbing trees.
