No, I've seen only brown stink bugs.

Maybe you don't have the freezing temps in the winter we have here and yours don't hibernate?
Yeah, coldest we get in my area would be 5C / 40F. Maybe 2 or 3 days a year. Might get to zero occasionally...but not every year.

Turn the flash on next time you take a bug picture, then maybe we will be able to figure out the species. There are literally thousands of different species.

Note: this Mo. Dept of Conservation notice only addresses the true stink bugs in North America and does not address all the True Bugs that happen to resemble stink bugs.

You won't even know the predatory varieties from the plant-sucking versions, 'cause they are all "stink bugs" to you.

Some of the "true bugs", notably the boxelder bug, are notorious for overwintering as adults. They find a defect in the seals of your house, then slowly crawl inside during autumn. Then they swarm outside on a warm day, presenting themselves in swarms to breed. Sometimes they just wander around inside, hoping nobody kills them before spring emergence. Other "stink bugs" have other methods of surviving winter, like laying durable eggs.

I posted a pic of a boxelder bug a few pages back.
By the way, the boxelder bug isn't particularly smelly.
Ok, biologist here...non-practicing, lol.

Shield bugs are the family Pentatomidae? Or is it more general...more descriptive. If it looks like...then it is?

I think these bugs look VERY similar, but mine is family Tessaratomidae. I don't think you have the same actual creature...ours only live here.

But unless we are counting exposed abdominal spiracles (mine have 6, yours have 5) then it's likely they are easily confused.

Exactly the point I was making.

If a person's only interest is whether a bug is going to sting them when whacked, or whether it will smell bad when whacked, it only remains necessary to tell the stink bugs from the wasps, and perhaps the spiders.

If, however, you wish to learn about any "bug", and want to know why it is inside your house, how to avoid that condition, whether or not it transmits any diseases or in general have a better understanding, it becomes important to escape the "stink bug" classification.

For example, if you had posted a pic of this stink bug, I would have alarming news for you if you found it crawling up your door:

It is believed this one lead to the death of Charled Darwin. Yep. It's in North America, but is prevalent in South America.

My God are you being extra dense. I think we've discovered a new genus of stink bug today... the pdq variety., indigenous to MO.

Matt specifically said his stink bug is "bronze orange," in Australia, and with a single click was found online.
My stink bugs, located in TN, are the brown marmorated variety, as seen clearly in the photo I posted.
And when I first said to him, "That looks like a stink bug." I was 100% correct.
So piss off, Mr. Stink Bug.

We were talking about these two STINK BUGS only - until you decided to toss in every bug that stinks, or doesn't stink... and somehow at the same time, comparing that to someone spraying water, and brine-damaged conifers.
Get a funking grip, dude, you're losing it.

Any stink bugs in your neck of the woods?
I'll bet you have the same brown marmorated stink bugs in GA that we have here in TN.

Sure we have them. Sometimes they hitch a ride in on firewood and I put them on the woodstove and watch them sizzle.

We see more harlequin bugs on the vegetables than we do stink bugs.

Sizzle and stink. :baba:
When I see one in the house, I gently catch it with a folded napkin (tissues are too thin to contain any spray) and toss it in the outside garbage.

I had those squash bugs in the garden this year, don't think I saw any of the stink bugs there.
I don't think I've seen any harlequin bugs - yet.

Well, looky there.
I've got you acknowledging that they do come in different varieties. So you can learn. Can you learn not to pass out insults to folks who have remained polite to you, despite your frequent attacks?

How would you distinguish the invasive species, the brown marmorated one from the "tan stink bug", 16 species of which are native to your area?

Duh. That was clear when Matt said his bugs are bronze-orange and I said mine are brown
So you can learn.
This would be considered a smart-ass remark, and a backhanded insult...

See above.

I wouldn't.

... that frequents AS forums turning a simple benign comment, or WTF image, into a never-ending episode of The Discovery Channel?"

Easy: it has furry ears, a long bushy tail, a long pointed snout, and goes by the common name of "PDQDL"

I cannot control what you "read in" to my statements. More properly, you should have recognized that I wasn't calling you stupid, instead I was identifying that you had a bad attitude about my educational comments. Which I still consider to be the cause of your irritation.

If you see that as a back-handed insult, then that is on you.

Well thanks! I have always liked the Discovery Channel. I consider that an unintended compliment. BTW: I don't capitalize that user name.

You know what? If it were just me then that would be one thing. But, I can name off the top of my head at least twenty AS members who have the same issue with your over-the-top comments.

The fact that you wish to drag on forever about the "looks like a stink bug" comment should make you realize that's not normal.

Just to recap...
Good for "Bronze-orange beetles" which I hate!

That looks like a stink bug.

And pdqdl has turned those two simple statements into the greatest debate since the Craig-Hitchens debate.
Get a grip.

And pdqdl has turned those two simple statements into the greatest debate since Craig-Hitchens debate.

It was never a debate. You never commented on any thing opposed to my statements, only to the fact that I was not authorized by you to make them.

That's against forum rules, I might add.

It take two to tango, and every "debate" would stop if either party desisted. So here we are again, with you telling me how I should stop cluttering up a thread with with my argumentative nature, yet you remain the one dragging it out. I confessed my faults from the very beginning.
It's just me being me.

You need to look in the mirror a bit more if you wish to blame anyone for extending this conversation.
And another "By the way": the comments in this spat hardly rise to the level of the Craig-Hitchens debate. Don't even embarrass yourself by making that comparison.

Now you are lying. And it wouldn't be the first time I called you out in a lie.

And you're just plain full of ****. And once again you have derailed and devolved this thread.
You really are talented that way.
