Can anyone help me figure out what may be wrong with my maple tree. The past couple of weeks I have noticed the leaves are turning black on the edges and wither and are now falling. We had a couple of nights of freeze warnings in our area, but the other big maple next to it is uneffected. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

notice any ants crawling around the tree base or limbs?

ants love to nest in maples.

ants

Nope no ants. This year it seems the tree has a lot more helicoptors than normal though.

ha....i noticed that myself. the people next door have 4 huge ones and i always get clobbered with them. this year was unreal...i must have 3 million of them in my yard, and the trees have more to drop!!!

it must be cyclical that they have so many at certain times...or, the end of the world is near and they are trying desperately to reproduce in order to survive. lol

The culprit is most likely anthracnose which is a bacterial disease that typically can infect trees at this time of year. It's the cool and damp weather has allowed the disease to proliferate and in some cases be severe and cause Spring leaf drop. The good news is that generally healthy trees will survive and be fine.

Same thing is happening to my 100 year(I guess, It's huge)old white oak in my front yard. It would be a lot of good firewood but I would hate to see it go. It is grand.
