This issue again leads off with a profile of a company and its owner. Great concept, showing what folks in different places can do when they want to do the best tree care possible. The PA guy is not only in asca and an isa bcma, but his co. is TCI-registered; to hit that trifecta takes some serious commitment--financial, studying, personal and corporate.

It sounds like all that work is paying off well for him too. my favorite part was how the article started off with rootzone work, where the tree begins.

And the mag got a homeboy to run an advice column, too! (p.12) Let's send in some stumpers for the forester, ok?

Nice article on Don Blair's eqpt book too; all in all a good mix of ads and info. I could do without the red border ads on every page tho; what do you all think?

Speaking of BCMA Guy, what is your take on it so far?
So far, I think it was a good investment for me. It gives me more props than ASCA's RCA, and costs less. (ASCA is trying to push their brand, but they are so small, I don't know if RCA will ever be better than BCMA) It kicks your name to the top of ISA's weblist of CA's; I've gotten some good contacts that way.

And I think it's good for the industry to have that level established. If you're comfortable with the sample test on the ISA website, you should be ok with the real thing. You gonna give it a shot?

Maybe, the body's breaking down too fast, I may be looking at a career change of some sort. Depends on if I can find work in the industry around here, since Diane's not moving.

With your supervisory skills and knowledge, a company'd be lucky to have you. Then again, the company thing does not always work out, does it? You're not the only arbo who's been unable to corporationally integrate, for whatever reason.

I never could, unless I really had to, which is not a point of pride.

But either way, a nonphysical fallback option is nice. I note there is only one asca member in mke metro; looks like there's room even for you.

Has anyone else received their May issue? It also had a big article on a 2-year rigging job; the $100,000 contract price caught my attention. :Eye: That showed the many rewards that can come from expert low-impact removal work for clients able to pay well for it.

You're not missing much.
I got my Arbor Age on the same day; I would say that about that. MB must be confusing the two, or he's just way too  for school.

Nick in CA, keep bugging them. I had to send 4 reminders before I started getting TS. Persistence paid, after a while. :)

any other Canada folks seen this magazine yet? I havent. signed up and nuttin much in my mail box.

Nope. 3 or 4 emails and a phone call and I still haven't gotten anything.

Jim Kendrick here, publisher of TREE SERVICES magazine.

Coupla things:

1. Because of snail mail, the magazine takes 3-4 weeks to get to you after you've signed up. BUT ... please pester me personally if you think you're waiting too long. You can always get me email [email protected]
or, call me anytime at 800-422-7147. I have six other magazines ... and as each one has started over the years ... I've had the same concerns ... but in the long run the schedule works out.

2. MasterBlaster: Sorry you are disappointed in the content of the magazine. Fact is ... sorry if anyone else feels this way. I've had my editors watch this site carefully ... and try to find articles which we think will be of benefit to you folks (afterall, you're the ones who know). We're not tree guys, we're magazine guys.

Again -- please let me know what else you'd like to see in the magazine. Believe me, I DO react to reader input. And I don't wait for weeks to do it. When I get input I go directly to the folks who work for me and ask them to change direction.

I really want TREE SERVICES to be the best, most useful and most entetaining magazine in the industry. I can only do this if you folks steer me in the right direction.

(oh, and MasterBlaste ... give it one more shot, okay?)

Thanks.

Jim, while I appreciate your direct input here in the forum and the fact you provided your personal contact info, it appears you need to take a long hard look at the subscription/sign-up process. Something must be very wrong for so many subscriptions, mine included, to get lost in shuffle.

Have you thought about publishing a PDF version so we are not at the mercy of the gremlins who are eating subscription requests. Since it's a free magazine, why not make it freely available (along with back issues).

Don't pay no never mind to ole Butch. His main criteria for a good magazine is the pics, not the words. ;)

Of the three, I put it in the middle.

Which three?

Not Arbor Age? I don't even open it up anymore. It just goes right in the trash. What a waste of paper.

Yep. TCI, TSM, and AA.
Too bad you only list the freebies, and don't read Arborist News. The June issue was one of the best lately; great articles by Costello (adventitious roots) and Coder (managing older trees). These guys are excellent! :blob2:

Others on controlling mites, assessing stability, marketing logs (Butch this one would be of interest to your bossmen), EAB, NATFD, and BCAT, about a guy who makes a career of exploring canopies in rainforests.
"Nice work if you can get it, and (as he shows) you can get it if you try", like the old jazz song goes.
ISA membership costs < $.30 per day. What is that; 4 cigarettes, a small pack of gum? :Monkey: I don't think any tree guy can NOT afford to belong. Re the mags, competition makes them all stronger; print on!
