Daniel, I guess you're really asking Geofore about the special
cut since we didn't make any such thing.
About the falling angle:
We did it so the notches were exactly opposite to each other,
180 degrees between them if you like. I really can't seen any
point in making them in any other direction.
For safety you will need the wire puller or an equal device,
that way the man making the lower felling cut can clear out
and stand back and the tree won't move until you start pulling
with the wire puller. Of course this assumes you leave enough
of a hinge.
I wish I could have filmed the whole thing and showed you, but
I was busy wire-pulling when it came down.

The possibilities are really cooking in my head now. I see that this technique has been used to pull two leads over, one of top of the other. Now, what do you think about trying to lay the two stems next to each other if there is enough open space? By aiming the face cut off to one side or the other of the pull line, the second stem should start over when the first stem falls. Then as the hinge comes into play, the tree will follow the face and come down on the side.

The beauty of all this is the ability to be able to set the whole works from the ground using a throwline and some running bowlines.

There is a better than middling chance that I'll never even use these techniques :) Kind of like understanding how to use Silvey jacks.

I've spoken with several people who have watched clearance fellers work a line. One method employed is to notch a whole line of trees with each tree aimed into the next. Then near the end of the day they will fell the last tree and send them all down like dominoes. I assume they do this so they don't have to climb over 3-4 trees to cut the next one.
I've never seen this but spoke to several people at different times over the years who have seen it done.

dominoes

It is good they made it illegal here. A caution, on a hillside the wind blows one way in the morning sun and another after lunch, knock them down before lunch or the wind will do it for you.
