I was over at a client's today marking trees. After I was done with that, I went over to see the groundskeeper to tell him that if he sees anything that I missed to just let me know. As I am getting closer to him I see that he is sitting on top of a Bobcat loader with a Poulan chain saw on his leg. No chain brake on the saw of course, and the chain was REALLY loose. So with the engine sitting on his leg, and the bar not too far from his knee, he is sitting there pulling on it to get it running. He is lucky that he did not get cut. I just sent an e-mail to the client urging him to get protective gear for the man.

You missed an opportunity to teach the fellow some basic safety techniques. Gentle suggestions are all that's needed. Point out the reasons that you don't work like he is.

How would you feel if you missed this opportunity and the guy got hurt later in the day? Maybe I have too much angst in my life, but these thoughts cross my mind. I sure would have liked to have been working with Pete a few years ago :(

John and Tom, I would have loved to have been able to show the guy how to do things right... but I can hardly communicate with him at all. The guy speaks NO English, and I barely speak any Spanish. I did try to show him a couple things about the saws, but we couldn't understand eachother, and he didn't really seem interested anyway.
