I have had my saw for about a year now and it runs a 16in bar great. I'm wanting a little more power to run the 20in bar. I'm thinking of putting on a HD filter and cutting gills on the side of the muffler. Are the adjustments on the side of the chainsaw enough or will I need bigger jets?

Thanks.

Thanks. I'll be doing this myself. I just want to make sure before I do it that the adjustments are enough, or will i need to get bigger jets for the carb so i dont run lean?

I'm not much on "modding" anything. I always set my aim at running like the factory made them to do.
I put up the pics for the guys that like to mod, so they know what you have.
I do not think that they have replaceable jets on that carb. Here is the manual so you can see how to adjust it.

This model responds very well to a simple muffler mod and ignition timing bump. It comes really choked down by the factory in order to allow stihl to manufacture hotrods like the 241, 261, and 462.

That's nice to know. I have searched a lot and can never find anyone nodding these saws. I'm pretty mechanical minded but new to saws and modding carbs. I still dont understand how you can know if it's too rich or lean..

How do you mod the muffler? How is the ignition changed and + or -?

I think the most important step to start with will be to learn how to tune a carb.
I was reading through one of the stihl manuals and it had the most accurate and complete instructions for carb tuning I've read so far, but I'm not able to track it down for reference. Maybe Harley knows which piece of info I'm talking about and can help with that pdf file.

I know how to use the high, low, and idle speed adjustments. I use a video off of YouTube for reference since I've only done it once. My thing is, how would I know if the high speed adjustment isnt feeding enough fuel? What if I did a filter and carb port and it was getting more air than the high speed could adjust for. Currently I only want to do a muffler and filter change. I dont feel comfortable doing timing work. I would feel fine doing the muffler and HD filter if I knew it wasnt going to make the machine run to lean because the adjustment wont run rich enough.

I think the best thing from your perspective would be to have it tuned at a reputable shop and just use it as is. If you need more power then buy a bigger saw.

I texted the number you have available about muffler and timing if you do that as well. I dont need a bigger saw, I'd just like to be able to run a 20 in bar without having it bog down as much.

The last thing I want to do is give someone advice that leads to a problem, that's why I emphasize the importance of carb tuning experience. Having that knowledge will give you the ability to determine if the flow through the carb is adequate or not and I guarantee you this is not beginner level troubleshooting.

If this is something you want to have done then feel free to send it my way or take advantage of the numerous reputable builders in your area to save you shipping cost.

I double checked for the text you sent but nothing has come through yet.

Once you pull the limiter caps off the carb adjusters you will have lots of adjustment for a muffler mod and filter upgrade.
You'd have to do some crazy porting before the carb wouldn't adjust far enough.
I've always found it easy to adjust the high on chainsaw carbs, you make the saw 4 stroke/sputter out of the cut then clean up when cutting. Start rich and work your way lean until it cuts the fastest. The low is a bit harder, you need to make the saw idle, start and respond to throttle good but its still not hard.
