ive always wondered how to add a lil bit to a saws power . i have a echo cs4400 and a stihl 036 pro. im looking to play with the echo, what can i do to give it a little more guts without getting too drastic. any help would be great

Here are some pics of the muffler on an Echo CS4400 that I recently did. The pics are a little fuzzy, but they get the point across. On the right side ( bar facing you ) I used a deflector from a Shindaiwa 360 parts saw. I cut a hole in the muffler with a dremel tool and welded the deflector on. On the right side I cut the whole tube out, but still used the original hole and deflector ( the original deflector I also opened up ). The tube is the big restriction. It runs across the entire width of the muffler and is only 3/8 " wide. When I cut the tube out I only cut it back far enough to let the exhaust gas get past and go thru the opened hole. Make sure that you deburr all the cuts that you make too. The CS4400 is a pretty stout saw stock. It should run alot better now. It sure sounds alot better too!

For the 036 you can possibly pick up a used muffler from an older saw as a very easy solution.&nbsp; For example, mine (circa 2000) came with only a pea-sized (Canadian pea, <i>not</i> one from Texas) outlet hole.&nbsp; A friendly local dealer sold me a used older version for ten bucks which has a hole approaching &frac34;" with a nice slot right next to it.&nbsp; The muffler was slightly tweaked at it's cylinder interface but a few seconds with a ball pein hammer took care of that.

You might want to do a little trimming on the carburetor adjustment screw caps with a sharp knife just in case those pesky limiter tabs are in the way.

Don't know about the Echo, but Rich's work sure looks purty, don'tn't it?

im gonna do the cs4400 tonight but my 036 is also a 2000 vintage (very good year) but sadly it wont run due to carb problems. im gonna try a carb kit this week. im runnin out of ideas quick

you can pull you tail off and it wont do a thing. but when yougive it a shot of gas directly in the carb itll fure up and run away with no control from the throttle. im wondering if the thick spacer gasget under the top cover(one held on with a single screw) and the thin plastic sheet with the notches ahd holes in it are reversed. now the thin pice in on the carb body followed by the thick gasget, then the top and screw. this saw is like new in every way and i got because its previous owner had the same problem
