This winter is the first year we've burned wood in our home. Getting enough dry wood has been an adventure and finding kindling sometimes takes a backseat. We've made due with cut branches and leftover 2x4s we've come across. However, I decided I need to make a really good score and take a day to cut and prep some for awhile.

Long story longer. The wife and I both with kids in the city and we were leaving a school in Manhattan last night and very unexpectedly next to our car someone has put out 4 large hardwood pallets for the trash. For those of you who haven't been this way one of the charming parts of NYC is that there are no alleys or spaces between buildings to accommodate trash so there are large piles lining sidewalks in the evenings and mornings (and most other times truth be told!).

While I thought the wood scavenging wouldn't happen until this weekend, Manhattan turns out to be an okay place for this too!

subway...that's a silly question

if he is anything like the rest of us..he has at least one saw with him all the time

ya live in NY city ?? get out now, while your still alive !!!!!!!!!
aww, i guess it's a lifestyle i would surely never adapt too... been through it a few times, hated every mile, some little bastard threw a bottle off of an overpass and hit the front of my truck years ago, i could see 'em and was wondering how long it would take me to drive back to central Pa. get my 7mm mag and come back, hoping he would still be there ??
and since i'm babeling, whoever named philadelphia the "city of brotherly love" obviously never went through it !!!!!!!!
sorry, i'm done now.......... glad you got some free BTU's..
go steelers..

i hear that showrguy i been to ny once. that was enough for me. im suprised i didnt have a brain annurism. im definatly stayin outta the city thats for sure.

pallets are great free heat. the first year i bought my house i got laid off. i think i heated the house primarily with pallets in the fireplace that year. it was rough but i did it. you do what you have to in a pinch.

I can understand all the frustrations with NY City you might have. It's been quite an adjustment. I grew up in a small midwestern town. So the last 7 years i've been figuring it out as I go. I do live an hour from the city in a pretty wooded place. So I'm not having to live in the middle of all those millions of people!

Oh, and I didn't have a saw on me. We were driving a subaru outback and it turns out 4 pallets fit real nice into the back of one of those! If there had been 5 I think we could have gotten 5, but for now the known capacity of 4.

If you had a saw with you, I would bet on 12-15 if you fold the rear seat down. Another excuse to carry a saw, gallon of gas and bottle of oil all the time. I very rarely don't have at least that with me in the truck.
