Not sure if I have the right topic for this but here it is.

About two months ago I was driving home from work, I see someone waving me down. I stop and notice another guy laying on the ground. I jump out of my truck and realize there is a 16" ash tree he had cut down, pinning him on the ground. He was screaming get this bleeping thing off of me. I ran grabbed my saw from my truck, and cut him free.then cleared a trail for the emt. I stayed with this guy till rescuers arrived.
I went home feeling great about myself. But when I told my wife "rn" she told I shouldn't have done that. When the paper came out it said no cutting happened till rescue team arrived

I stihl feel I did the right thing,"the smashed leg was not the one under the tree"

What do you think? Would you do the same?

RN's and emt's think everything should be exactly by the book. Reality is when someone is hurt anybody on site first should do whatever they can to help. It's like the seat belt law... I have to wear a seatbelt in my 3/4 ton truck but the guy on the freeway that just passed me on his motorcycle does'nt have one on. Makes alot of sense does'nt it?:confused2: Yes I would've done the same as you to answer your question.

I would have bucked the log while he had it propped in the air with his leg!

No in all seriousness each situation has it's own criteria. So if the log was on his chest and he couldn't breathe were you supposed to shrug your shoulders and say sorry gotta wait?
You do what you gotta do and I would be proud to help!

Good for you. Rep headed your way.

I make the newspaper on occasion and they rarely get the information right. If they do they get the names backwards.

For the record - I would have done the same thing if I saw that and I work in public safety.

EMTs may have done you a favor by keeping you out of it. You know how sue happy this country is. I would have cut the tree off the guy also.

As an EMT I understand why they think you should have waited. There is a possibility that you could do far more damage than good. There are a lot of variables that the Emergency personal are thinking about when they plan there moves, and how each will effect the patient. However this is how I see it, you didnt pass by because you were too scared somebody was going to beat and rob you. You stopped to see if you could help, and you got the log off the guy. We get calls all the time man down in the road, and nobody ever stops to see if there is really a problem. Most of the time its a bum just sleeping, sometimes its a doa, but almost every time the caller was a passer by and didnt even stop. So I say good on you!!

If you are trying to help an injured person in an emergency and you hurt them, they have no grounds to sue. That is already established in the courts. I think its called The Good Samaritan Act.

the only thing I would have done differently is to video it. :hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

Maybee cut a few cookies off at first while he's still holdin the log up......

I think you did the right thing in the situation. In Wisconsin we have a "good Samaritan" law to protect people that are attempting to give aid at the scene of an accident, knowing that they are not train proffesionals they are not held to the same standards. I think you did a good thing and the guy asked you to cut the tree off of him. Rep headed your way.

PS If I am every pinned under a tree, I give you permission to cut it off me.

Had I had a saw in my truck like you did......"Effin" right I woulda done the same thing......no questions.
****.....even if I didnt have a saw, I woulda at least stopped and tried to comfort the guy any way I could until paramedics arrived.

Good on you:clap:

I agree that they most likely left you out of it in the paper just in case some buffoon whispers in the guys ear that he can make thousands suing you for negligence or something...

Its increasingly rare in today's society that people actually stop to help each other. Just witness how many muggings take place with hundreds of onlookers.

Years back a rapist prowled one of our larger parks, attacked a young lady suntanning in broad daylight. People watched and did nothing while he dragged her into the trees screaming...

I would've probably beaten him half to death, but then he would be a victim. Stupid laws everywhere. Rep sent for being a good samaritan.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing, isn't it? It's different when you're there, it's happening in real time and you have to make the call. There's risk in everything, but in an emergency you do what you believe to be the right thing - otherwise you're too afraid to do anything. The EMT view is that since you're not the expert you shouldn't do anything but wait for them. How long would that guy have been pinned if you hadn't cut it off him? What if leaving it on him held open some injury and caused him to bleed out?

How did the log fall on him? I see Brad posted already so we know it wasn't him. Was he cutting a tree with a 390XP, that saw is probably jinxed.:hmm3grin2orange:

You did the right thing, be glad you even had the saw with you!

He cut it down himself. Instead of running back he looks few steps to the side, bet he wont do that again. His saw was on the ground.looked like an eager beaver or wildthing. So I grabbed mine.

When I showed up the guy that flagged me down said he was there for about 15 minutes and had called for help. Emts showed up in about 30 minutes. These clowns took forever to do anything. When they got him on the stretcher and started walking his busted leg fell of the side, boy did he scream. They didn't even secure him, friggin part timers
