Hind sight is 20-15!

Not sure if I have the right topic for this but here it is.

About two months ago I was driving home from work, I see someone waving me down. I stop and notice another guy laying on the ground. I jump out of my truck and realize there is a 16" ash tree he had cut down, pinning him on the ground. He was screaming get this bleeping thing off of me. I ran grabbed my saw from my truck, and cut him free. Then cleared a trail for the emt. I stayed with this guy till rescuers arrived.
I went home feeling great about myself. But when I told my wife "rn" she told I shouldn't have done that. When the paper came out it said no cutting happened till rescue team arrived

I stihl feel I did the right thing,"the smashed leg was not the one under the tree"

What do you think? Would you do the same?

So.....if he'd cut a tree down....that means there was a saw there......the person waving you down.....couldn't use the saw to remove the tree? Was this person cutting alone? Who was this person waving you down? Was the guy grateful to have the tree off of him?

Good job! Hind sight is 20-15! Should have.....Would have......Could have...... There was probably 10+ other ways you could have handled it....you chose one and acted!

Looking back at times that I've stopped to help others, I can see how I was 'put there' for the reason to help. Have you found the story from the paper on the internet?

The "no cutting happened" ......I think some people are so DEATHLY afraid of chainsaws, as others mentioned, this was put in there to ease the fears of others that the cutting was done by a 'professional'. I wonder what the pros would have done? Waited for someone to come with a saw? Used a rescue saw with a carbide tipped chain so it would have taken longer to remove the tree? I'm fairly certain that you probably have more trigger time than the 'pros'!

Not having seen the conditions, I'm sure while cutting you took into the fact that the tree could shift and pin the guy worse.

While waiting for the EMTs.....did you finish bucking the tree and split it up since it was ash? :hmm3grin2orange: :yoyo:

EDIT.... I see some of my questions have been answered while I was putting wood in my stove! LoL!

If I'm ever hurt/in trouble like this , I can only hope that someone like you comes along . Someone with balls enough to do the right thing .

He cut it down himself. Instead of running back he looks few steps to the side, bet he wont do that again. His saw was on the ground.looked like an eager beaver or wildthing *****edited with a dull blade:laugh:****. So I grabbed mine.

Another very good reason to have a saw at the ready!

EDIT... Now...if you had cut up the rest of the tree but left the part that was pinning the guy! There wouldn't have been good intentions there!

the guy who flagged me down was the pinned down guys neighbor. Heard screams from hundreds of feet down the road. He was cutting alone and yes the neighbor did not touch the saw. And the tree was on his leg and off the ground so i cut from the underneath at an angle so the rest of it would just drop without any resistance. This whole ordeal took place 30 feet from the road.

This world today is to much. Growing up we didn't even have an ambulance in town. The police had station wagons so they could transport the people to the local hospital in the back. We were more of a together society back then. The lawyers and insurance Co's I parrtly blame for this fragmentation. It's like us against them. Politically correct beziek. RIDICULOUS I say. We need to get back together. Don't help your fellow man in a situation like that!? What the heck has happened to this country? Good for you!!! Rep sent.

Did the guy ever thank you? You're a hero in my book.

So did you keep the wood seeing as you cut it:confused2:

I think you did the right thing and I myself would rather not be acknowledged do to the legal rammifications which still might not be over.

I would have done as you did but like wise wonder why the other guy did not cut the tree as well.

Apparently no matter how big a stick someone gets hit with it won't fix bad manners!

I am 30 years young, and the changes ive seen in my time are astonishing.the world is going down the toilet and people keep pulling the handle faster. First bad thing happens and the pointer finger comes out to play.(please turn180 degrees to your left or right) I have noticed the the hard working class are more United and willing to help others, with is great cause thats who i hang around with.

Yep......he probably needs wood!

I would have grabbed my saw and placed it on the ground to warm up while I went through the guys pockets, then cut him loose, and left with my saw and his. You just can't trust strangers these days - especially if they show up with a chainsaw and a hockey mask.

So i'm curious...
After they hauled him away......
how long did it take you to buck up the tree, and how much wood did you get from it?:hmm3grin2orange:
i left the wood behind. should have took it as a reward:laugh:

If you come onto an accident and the victim is asking for help or is unconscious and you do what you believe is helpful the good samaritan law will probably protect you if things go south. If the victim refuses help and you force help after you hear the refusal you may be charged or prosecuted. I would have done the same as you.

I always stop and help people if I can. Last summer I could see smoke coming from one of my friends house as I was driving down the road. I pull into the driveway and could see my friends mother(who has MS and can barely walk) trying to crawl out of the house as smoke was just billowing out the front door. I ran up and picked her up and got her away from the house. Seconds after she was clear of the house the front doorway that I had just pulled her out of was ingulfed in flames. If I would have been ten seconds later to her house(For once my speeding came in handy) she probably wouldn't have made it.

Was I suppose to wait for EMS? I don't think so.

My father last summer was skidding trees with his truck and cable/block/tackle closer to the road when a branch of one of the trees got snagged on a standing tree. He proceeded to cut the limb which had a lot of tension on it. He said he knew he wasn't standing in the best place to cut the limb but was in a hurry(thats my father). Well the limbs snaps and slams into his legs just above his knees pinning him to the ground. My mother was with him. She couldn't start the saw so she gave it to my father and he cut the tree off of himself. He hurt his legs so bad he didn't even go deer hunting. Well he didn't push deer with us but he still used crutches to go out and sit. I could tell the pain from not being able to hunt all 15 days of season hurt him worse than the leg pain.

Was he suppose to wait for EMS? I don't think so.

So yes I think you did the right thing. Its always a judgement call but I will never just stand by and do nothing if I can be of assistance.

Good job buddy.

Oh and I always carry a chainsaw in my truck. Ya just never know when you might need it. This darn forum. Before I found this website I had one chainsaw, now I have 10.

Sorry, I didn't mean to take away from the main post.

Always be careful when stopping to help people. Because sometimes people get robbed or possibly killed. It was obvious that this was not the case with the OP. Just throwin that out there....
