Can an 044 be upgraded with a new jug and piston that has the decompression port, like the new MS440? Wondering if they are the same size, or if there is a cutoff in the 044 production where this might be possible. I am looking at buying an 044 for occasional use but my dad is in his 70's and still like to cut firewood occassionally. 044 is fine for me to start, but I'd like to make it easier for my dad to use.

Yes it can, but why? After buying a new jug, top cover and decomp valve it might not cost you much more to buy a new 440 in the first place. It might actually be cheaper to buy new.

It would certainly cost you less to have a decompressor installed. I believe there is some consideration about flaking the nikasil as you drill the hole thru, so disassembly would likely be necessary. Ben is right about cost for all new cyl and related parts. It cost me just about 1/2 the price of a whole new saw just for jug, piston, and carb boot. Did I hear someone say that Stihl is very proud of their parts? So is Husqvarna!
