I just acquired a 2004 BC1000XL and it runs very good and it chips very good. The knives could be replaced but they aren't shot and the pillow block bearings have recently been replaced on both sides. My problem is that there is a spot as the drum turns that it seems to be either bumping something or like the drum is out of balance - I can't figure it out, it's making a noise as it spins that gets louder the faster it turns. But I've taken off the access plates on top and one on bottom, but nothing seems to be in the way. Any suggestions? I know I could just take it to Vermeer here in Atlanta, but I'm kind of trying to save the $80.00 an hour service charge. I've been through these chippers several times before, so I know them pretty well. But this is the first time I've experienced this issue. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!

I'd take the knives off the drum since they stick the furthest out and see it you still have the noise. Don't know much about the 1000 but if the noise is still there I would look at the sides of the drum - where the fan paddles are on most drums - like I said I don't know the 1000, I am assuming it has fan paddles - maybe the drum shifted to the side.

A broken inner race on a bearing can make a clicking sound as it is rotated. You can get a stethescope and narrow down where the noise is coming from.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks!

Thanks Bigstumps - will do - I need to replace the knives anyway and will check the bearing race too. Yes it does have the side fan paddles.
We'll see what happens

would look at the housing the drum is build into for cracks and or compromised supporting components. Also check the paddles thoroughly enough to determine if some are smaller then others, may have been rubbing on housing, and now drum way out of line. i workrd with this chipper quite a bit, so would also check the shear bar to look for signs of an ungrindable coming into the chipper... something has to give? check drum for deep gauges, etc. good luck
