anyone have some great/horrible warranty stories on their saws - do chainsaws really have warranties? or are they simply for marketing?

A warranty is as good as the dealer backing it. Husqvarna has a lifetime warranty on the ignition components which is pretty self explanatory. However other things can get muddier and if you are a repeat customer the dealer may just eat it for your business

Here is a warranty story. A while back one of the major manufactures offered a thirty day,no questions, replacement on their new model. I think it was an 044 but I am not sure. A contractor bought one because he was clearing for a large project. There were two shifts and that saw was used constantly for those thirty days. It was worn out at the end of thirty days, but he got a new saw. The company said no more. I talked to the mechanic that saw the machine and he said it looked thirty years old not thirty days! Mike

yeah - can you believe the warranty on stihl pro models is 90 days - seems ridiculous. Now i agree that the warranty is only as good as your dealer, but 90 days!!!!husky has 1 year warranty in professional use and 2 years for consumers. stihl has 1 year on their consumer models. this is why i really wanted some warranty experiences - interested in how each backs their product up if something ever did go wrong.

i cant complain about my stihl dealer,i bought a 020t and a046 from them,i have not had any problems w/ the 046,but the 020t i had a problem w/ the gas throttle sticking on it,and the gas tank cracked onit they fixed them both, warranty covered, very happy the gas tank was about 100.00 they probobly figured i would be back to buy another saw later, they were exactly right,if they wouldnt have covered these things i wouldnt buy another product from them. i got plans to get a 066 or 088 next which do you guys prefer,i would be using thm for stumps and cutting llarge wood

As a Husqvarna and Jonsered Dealer, and having dealt with Stihl warranty..I can say that the manufacturers warranty is usually very good...everyone is correct in saying that it is as good as the dealer, but I have rarely ever run into problems with the manufacturers denying warranty, except in extreme circumstances (ie:abuse)..for chainsaws both the Husky and Jonsered have lifetime ignition warranties, and a 2 year consumer warranty, but for professional/commercial use the warrranty is 90 days....and of course these warranties are only applied to manufacturers defects...I am not absolutely positive on Stihls warranty policy, but I do imagine that it is very similar.

What a dealer considers warranty and a customer considers warranty is two different things.

Its not sears. If its warranty, I dont think its an issue. Some people try to pass stuff off. It gets old. Sears buys stuff from say Poulan without a warranty. Like they buy that 99 dollars saw for 39 bucks. Sears then eats any warranty given. They dont question any return or warranty. I think that sucks cause it makes people feel like they can treat there nice new Husky like crap then bring it in too you when a log rolls over it and you fix it. People need to be held liable for there actions. If I feel that a part broke out of warranty and I felt like it should have never broke. I will call for good will warranties. Most manufactures will do this.

Howdy,

As one formerly in charge of warranty, and for two different manufacturer's, allow me to assure you that no manufacturer wants a defective product out there. By that I mean a truely materials or workmanship defective unit.

The problems occur because a lot people, including marketing departments, abuse warranty. Warranty means a written document assurance (a Warrant). It means no more or no less than what it says on the paper.

Those policies that replace any complaint merchandise on submittion are marketing guarantee's, not warranty. These are following the highly cynical marketing theory, that so few will be returned that it will be an insignificant percentage of sales, and can be budgeted accordingly!

Warranty can also be abused as a sales tool. Again this is following some highly cynical numbers game.

warranty and guarantees are just like product liability, we all pay for it in the long run through higher prices charged for the goods sold. That's what society expects, and that is what we get.

It is amazing what some woodticks will bring a saw back for. #1 return is when the saw starts to cut tobogans, such as when your cutting South, the saw wants to go East, as though making wavy lumber.

Unless your ALAP'ing huge stumps everyday, I would go with the 66 - It does a fine job. If price/saw weight is not a problem, then go with the 88.
Personally, around these parts, I can use a 66 to cut anything a 88 could cut.
