Burned 260

No pro here, but lots of DIY engine experience.

NEVER run anything wide open with no load! My dad taught me that when I started playing with lawnmowers about 55 years ago. You wouldn't do it to your car, I'd bet.
DON"T count on governors you don't know about.
Get it idling OK, rev up, listen, adjust, try a cut.
The final adjustment of the high speed needle will likely
be a bit richer than the unloaded setting anyway, so sneak up on it with real cuts...may take three or four to hit the sweet spot. If it bogs down and dies suddenly under heavy load, it's likely too lean.
By starting rich, as advised, you know where you are and are less likely to over rev.
Good luck,
Wilson

what wilson said!!!!!! i didn't know any better, but that is the way I jet mine. make SURE it is too rich. put it to the wood. Lean it down till she quits 4 stroking in the wood. Then it is on the ragged edge of too rich.

btw, a 4 corner seize you cannot see through the exhaust port. a 4 corner seize starts with the skirts, and sometimes the rings don't even get stuck.

Well everyone, I'm going to take up Lake on his most generous offer to help me out in this case. And I'll learn quite a lot in the process. Tell you what. I'll take pics as we tear it down. We'll be able to see exactly how one destroys a saw in one easy step.

By the way, there is 50:1 mixed gas still in the saw. I'll drain it down at Lake's place in a couple of weeks. You can take his word for it. Stay tuned....and thanks for all your support.

Howdy JamesJems,

Soryy about your saw, I know its not a good feeling but it will pass with time. I do look forward to hearing/seeing the final results. I would say you are in good hands.

Howdy Lakeside53,

Your alright, good man. Keep spreadin the good.

Sorry to hear about your saw. I just adjusted my 026 on Saturday because she was too rich. I thought it was nerve racking after I did it because I didn't want to get it too lean. Stuff happens to all of us but at least there is a lot of great people on this site to help us out.

OK, I'll bite. How can you tell?

That's easy - It's a new saw, and in the lower left corner you can see the edge of the heat deflector - the MS260 have been this way since mid 2004... Earlier MS260 has the orginal 44mm bore. The bore was increased to make up for the epa porting changes and muffler.

Oh, and I told my girlfriend. Had to. She'll be coming down to Seattle with me when I take my say down to Lake's place. (Although I imagine I'll have to drop her off at the mall or she'll elect to sit in the car while we take this thing apart.) james

Ha! no, she doens't have to sit in the car. She can either split wood, or, hang out with my wife and exchange war stores about those fools with chainsaws:laugh:

Hey James, Swing by and pick me up on your way to lakesides place, I allways wanted to meet him in person.

Plus, this way youll have someone to talk saws with if the G/F dont cheer up by then.;)

We can even hit all the saw shops on the way there an see what kind of deals we can scare up.

Lakeside fixed me up...what a kind man.

Well, the story has a happy ending!

I took the saw down to Andy's house, which, if you don't know, is ground zero in the recent wind/snow storm that knocked out power to over 1 million people. Andy still didn't have power after, what, two weeks? And that was on the Friday before Christmas...

Nevertheless, Andy, working with a battery-powered Makita fluorescent shop light, with good humor and grace, took a look at my saw and fixed me up proper.

Just as many of you figured, it was a lean-seize. It got so hot, the rings burned into the piston and there was minor but significant heat scoring in the cylinder where the NikaSil (sp) cylinder coating was damaged. So the cylinder couldn't be saved. Andy, after fishing around in his amazingly well-equipped garage for this part and that part said, "Boy, someone is looking out for you, because I appear to have that part on hand too."

Yeah...someone was looking out for me. Make no mistake about it, this community is enriched by Andy's selfless presence. He's a saint. I also hear he's a pretty fair gardener too, and judging from the beautiful landscaping on his Lake-front home, I can attest to that.

So, for the cost of parts and a bottle of single-malt scotch, I have a pretty much updated brand new saw... again. Here's a pic of Andy for those of you who don't know what he looks like.

Me? I'm off to finish scavenging more blow-down from various places around this island I live on, working on my wood-pile for next year. I've only put a couple of tanks through it and it's a pleasure to use. Thanks to all those who shared my pain as I wandered aimlessly through this rather expensive lesson. And thanks most of all to Andy.

James:)

Oh...Arboristsite need another emot-icon (smiley face). One with a halo above the head....

Two thumbs up Andy. Way to go. Andy is a stand up guy and a very valuable member to the site. Wish there was more out there like him.

....

Pretty much evidence of that in the "missing a few..." tread also - no doubt about it!
