Back when I was about 16/17 I did some gardening work for this couple that my parents are friends with. I'm fairly certain that they burned me for a good chunk of the money.

Over the last 5 - 7 years I had called them a few times when I knew there was something fast that I could do there, make a few bucks when I needed work / money. They always had a friend that did their tree work for them.

After the last couple of storms we've had, they got some damage at their property. They sent an e-mail to my father, which was then forwarded to me (they are away). They asked if I could go over and clean-up the damage, stacking all the brush by the side of the road for the town to pick up. They figure it shouldn't take more than 2 hrs with a saw, no climbing required.

I responded to that with the following.. "Have you been smoking crack? Are you on drugs? I wouldn't call you for help if my life depended on it, and you think that I'm going over there to cut up some fallen branches?"

Needless to say that didn't go over too well.

Can't think why?

You should have emailed back to them that you had checked it out and it would take two days,a full crew and you would commence work as soon as the $5000 was deposited to your account!

The impressions & recollections of a 16/17 year old are often flawed. Perhaps they were waiting 5-7 years for you to grow up before they gave you more work. Have you?

I never burn bridges behind me. You can't tell who the fire will hurt in the end. It's wiser to just walk away and give no offense.

Told a potential customer today that if they thought my price was high that they will ---- themselves when they see the price to get the tree off of the house when the storm blows it over. Already tired of the lowballin unemployed hacks and the clueless homeowners who feed off of their pricing misconceptions. Not to mention their best practices for tree care....
Customer-" I need a price to top that tree but make it good and purty!"
Me-" Sir, I do not top trees, it is not a good practice.... ( my explanation of proper pruning practices follows ) "
Customer-" It is my tree and that is what I want done and I will pay you cash to do it so I will get a better price than with a check right?"
Me- " Here is my written up estimate to prune your tree up nice and proper, certificate of insurance, and one of my cards. I have several more estimates to do today so if you will excuse me. Have a good day."
Customer- " ____ Tree will top it for $250 less, think you can beat it?"
Me- " Not with the biggest stick I can lift, Hope he doesn't ruin your house at the same time he wrecks your tree. Gotta go!"

I should probably have mentioned that there was a fair amount of animosity there before this request was made... at a party that my parents hosted last summer the wife insulted me, so I just left the party to hang out with some friends. I don't insult her ever, but since then I've hung up the phone on her more than once if she called and only I was around to take the call. I do believe that the two of them are what most would call "users"

amazing...............

"users"[/QUOTE]
