What can you tell me about a jonsereds 520sp?

I found a nice looking used jonsereds 520sp. Is this the same saw as the fast cutting partner 5000 plus that everyone seems to love? The chainbrake didn't work and the throttle lock was missing. It seemed to have good compression,(didn't try starting it). Are the parts hard to come by? Is $100 a fair price? thanks

520SP

I don't think it is "the same" as the P5000, even though the handle design shows Partner influence.

It is probably closer to the "Semi-pro" P500.

The 490 is the Jred counterpart of the P5000, as far as I know.

I have a 510sp. Very similiar saw. I like it allot. Very light, especially when you consider how old it is.

Parts can be difficult to find. Mine is getting tired (compression around 120)

While I was able to locate a new piston ring (they only use one), I can't find a gasket and piston pin clips. The oiler works well, but if it fails, the cylinder needs to be removed for servicing it.

BTW, I run a 18 inch 325 .050 on it and it likes it. Check compression before you buy. I paid $75 for mine last year and it came with 2 bars and chains (18 and a 20). Even with 120 compression, it cuts fairly well, it would be a great saw if I can eventually get all the parts for a top end redo. KD

If you do purchase it, send me a PM and I'll make a copy of the factory service manual, it covers the 510/520sp

the 510 and 520 were open port and parts will not interchange with the partners easily.

one of the most interesting things about this saw is it is the first place I saw a crankcase that is like the husky 350, it has a clamshell bottom and the top bolts to it so it is 3 pieces total.

more than likely a very durable saw like the 49sp which some of the parts may interchange with.

for rings you can get any ring provided the dimensions are the same. like that ring was probably 44mm x 1.5mm

Sadly, as KD460 pointed out, parts for the older Jonsereds are increasingly NLA. (no longer available) You could probably find what you need from someone on this site, so be prepared to do some prospecting when you need stuff.

I know for a fact that Retoocs555 had a 520 parts saw but sadly he is no longer a sponsor here. His supply of older parts will be missed on this site.

Buck Futter, thanks, and yes, you are correct on the ring size. And again, you are correct on the 49sp having some parts crossover, just have not done my homework enough to be able to list what does cros over.

George Blake does have "some" parts, but mostly used stuff as far as I know. KD

Try to contact user "Mange", he has lots of older Jonsereds/Jonsered parts saws, I believe - and if he doesn't have what you need, he may be able to steer you in the right direction.......:biggrinbounce2: ;)
