Since a good work chain is not too far removed from a race chain, how do you make the judgement call on which is which?
Just by virtue of lightening the chain etc. etc., what really is the difference other than the cosmetics and a few hundreds of a second?
Truth be known, there are people out there that can make workchain faster than my race chain, so does this mean I would be disqualified for my lousy race chain?
Isn't it kinda like saying: " No sharp chains allowed."
If someone wants to take the chance of ruining a chain they have 12 hrs. into, shouldn't it be their choice? If no one is allowed to use so called race chain shouldn't we just all be using out of the box LG?
Not whining or nothing, just wanted to define the definition of race chain.

Gypo, I would say that a chain with the back of the tooth shortened and the raker ground to a pin would be "race" chain. A chain with the back of the tooth uncut and the raker only lowered would be a "working" or "woods" chain. I'm sure we're both gonna be attacked for having opinions.

From what I have been told by ^%^%&%$@ a proper filed chain compared to a race chain is about 10% faster. File a good chain, get your riders set up right and you'll be in the heap. 12 Hours per chain I think is a little under estimated there if your hand filing. I spent 6 hours just spinning a chain back together after milling all the cutters. But then again what do I know about running a chainsaw or even filing a chian.

This reminds me a fella that spent hours filing a chain, he claimed it was fast. It was for the first 4 inches and then it cut like a banana. Like Wiley E Coyote "back to the drawing board"

I donot see where it stated that you could not use a race chain, it says it is up to you , run whatever you want, it is your call.

But if it is a problem that some people can make a good work chain and others donot think it is fair then maybe they will just sit this one out, does that make things better

As a guy who has very limited knowledge about filing fast chains, I pay people to do mine for me. If I'm paying X amount of dollars for a competetive racing chain, I'll be darned if I'm using it for anything other than racing.

race chains

most peaple can make a race chain they just dont want to get off their a$$ and do it (1) if you file good that will put you in the top group of guys, only if you do the time consuming stuff like narrow the chain, take the back of the cutter off, clean out your gullet realy good and even, under cut your raker evenly, you can even stone your chain to make shure all cutters are cutting the same kerf, also adjust your gearing acording to your chain and motor, so dont complain when they want to run race chains because your realy sayying is that you are to lazy to put the time in, But heres the kicker your file job has the most potential to make the chain a winner so after all the peaple crying about the chains I think it realy boils to peaple are to LAZY to win!

Creepo,

For that matter, wouldn't the only true test of who has the better saw and skill to use it be to have everyone running identical chain? Elsewise, we're comparing who can make the better chain.

Lots of variables, but I guess it depends on the purpose of the contest.

Just a random thought that escaped.

john ,my 2 cents.. if a chain is made so it will stand a days work in clean wood..
dont matter how fast it is ,its still a work chain...this from a man who has onlyseen one chain dedicated to racing only.. and no it didnt stand up to a days work.. broke three cutters out ..jmo

Macman-
I don't know if your response was directed a me or others that don't have the knowledge or time to do what you suggest.
Let me give you a little insight as to when and why I race. I work 12 hrs a day as a foreman in a printing plant. I also travel to 30+ contests a year. With that kind of schedule and taking care of all my equipment for other events (I hold more than ten world records in other events- none in chainsawing), I have no problem paying someone else to file and prepare racing chains for me. Hey, if you are as good as you portray yourself to be, maybe i'll ask you to do a chain for me.

this was for the general population because if you have the money to buy a chain you must be woking alot their not cheap for a good one, 2nd you can get a better chain than mine I like mine but it is not the fastest out there if want the fastest chain talk to Tommy

A gathering like the one planned at Gypo's is for fun and also for learning. I say, if people want to bring race chains (however they're defined), fine, let 'em, but you can't hide it and if someone asks a question about how the chain was made (or who made it) then that question should be answered. Just like two guys sitting in a duck blind talkin' about reloading or two guys on their dirtbikes talking about suspension/porting, etc. Share and learn! Teach; raise people up to your level, etc. etc. This shouldn't be like Formula One where they cover everything with tarps and slam the garage doors down.

That right I think you should have to learn how to do some of it on your own I gave out what we do to race chains now you need to learn how to do it to your chain, also do you think somebody will tell you how to beat them and take prize money away from them. Some peaple will tell you how to do it wrong just to see you suffer, the most important thing you can do is learn how to file and that is 90% of the battle all the other is just fine tuning the chain to make it fast for you

I must've missed the post where Gypo mentioned the prize money...

Hi Bob, what started as a tailgate party is now a glorified exhibition and is growing rapidly I believe. Not sure about prizes yet, but I smell a new chainsaw for first and if we pay for entering the classes there will be $ also. I am trying to get the Stihl rep involved and possibly the Husky rep, so what we see is what we get as we just recently started to plan.
This is gauranteed to be fun though.
Come on up to the Woodtick Jamboree!

Would like all of you to show up to the Yukon Timber/ Gypo Logging show.

John is putting some really hard work in this and is going to be a good time. Lots of locals are scheduled to be there and the john is even going to be having some other events.

Johns going to be running his super tickled chains of his own creation and let me tell you, they are some race chains.

Hope you all can make it.

Im gonna kick back and go for the ride and watch this race.
Should be fun.
