you take a round file and use it to basically cut the gullet under the raker You dont want one cutter to have a larger open area than the others You want the chain to cut as smooth as possible Im shure every person on this site has had a chain that cut realy good and smooth, if you incorperate in the speed secrets you will have a great chain I have had chains that I fell with that hit a perfect spot and cut great and I would pull them and save them to work over for racing Also there are tricks I dont know so dont be scared of trying new things you might find a new trick and win some races so good luck And remember if you see a fast chain go look at it you might see something new but dont get to close because you might have better luck hitting on his wife , than getting a good look at his race chain!:Eye:

Have you determined what species of wood you will be cutting and if race chains are allowed in your outing? If this race is for prizes and possibly money, I would like to know.
Are you having alcohol classes?

Yes, Two classes, above 6% by volume and below 6%, but you would have to import the beverage from the US for the "below 6%" class :D

i keep my gullets back as best i can.. but i cant figure how that part affects the cut or smoothness. not doubting it ,just cant figure it..which is not a rare thing..:)

the gullet can carry chips and you want the chain to carry the same on every cutter 99% of the peaple wouldnt even notice the difference but it can make up time when you race

Look at the end grain on your cookies and the log that shows both sides of your cut. It should be very smooth if the teeth are as close as possible to identical. Any gouges means you are getting jerked around by something.

macman ,,went to bed that nite and it come to me ,,it might be,, about how well the chain mite clean out the cut.. thanks..

Do chips build up in the gullet? I thought the chips were severed by the combined action of the top plate edge and side plate edge and then went through the channel underneath the cutter. Maybe cleaning out the gullet just helps with weight reduction and helps with preventing the lower, unsharpened part of the gullet from getting in the way of the side plate edge.
