$600 to $700 each is the going price for a good one in my area (Port Angeles, WA on the North Olympic Peninsula). This size saw was the workhorse of the big tree loggers for years here until surpassed by the newer lighter Stihls. I have one (a 076AV), had two others but gave them to my son in law, he logs in the Coast Range.

Parts for both on ebay.

They should have a rim and drum, if not, buy and install. Run 404x063skip chain, and a 7 tooth rim. Turn the oiler up to high and push that manual oiler often!!! In the winter I thin chain oil 25 percent with kerosene. Grease the roller tip on every tank of fuel.

If you use them for milling be sure to use the optional tank for tip oiling. You want lots and lots of oil on the bar and chain, milling is hard on both.

If I were in the area I would buy both. I like them and the son in law loves them.

Cool Thanks! He said the same thing about older guys using them on big timber but seems like he was milling with them. Not sure how much butlittke worried about buying. Older saw that was milled with. I think it would be cool to fix it up tho if it runs good. I see the top covers moving around on some bad and others look tigh, when whstching YouTube’s What’s up with that? The one on CL looks like it has a big gap. I looked them up on here and seen guys paying like 250-450$ for a good running one. Thought that was strange

Why the 404 over 3/8?

404 has a stronger tooth, more chip clearance and stays sharp longer. The standard for big timber loggers. I would not mill with 3/8.

The top handle is mounted in rubber and isolated from the top cover and the engine. This keeps most of the vibration from your hands. AV means anti vibration. Look close at the photos and you can see the rubber isolation bushings.

So the engine and top cover moves from the vibration and you receive less of it in your hands. Important with the big saws. I have several old McCulloch big saws, I can feel the difference from the Stihls, the Macs do not have AV.
