Just eBay'd an 041 (hardtail) for $40. Haven't gotten it yet, but it looked good in the photos.

So, what should I know? Things to look out for, operating tips, history? It'll probably go back whence it came once I get it all tuned up and outfitted.

Sounds like a great deal if it runs, otherwise just give it to Gypo to put in the pile with his other 041s that he is going to canibalize to make a good one. Replacement parts are getting rare from what I`ve seen and OEM prices are out of line for what the saw is worth. I would thoroughly check all of the rubber for integrity and locktite all the screws before I hit the woodpile if I were you. The 041 is heavy for it`s power but is a very good saw.

Check the carb. bolts and make sure they stay tight. It has a few extra components stacked up, that could give you a fit. Other than that, they're rock solid.

John,

You son of a gun I think that is the one I got outbid on. I know a couple days ago I got outbid at about $40 on one. I have never had an 041 but I have always wanted one. I know they are heavy as heck but they must be decent as many as there are still around.

I know of one in fairly decent shape that's slated for retirement.  I'll make every effort to have it made available to an AS member if I can.

I got this one via Buy It Now. That fellow also had a Husky 36 BIN for $30, but it was already sold. I actually found the 041 (Farm Boss model) by clicking on his other auctions--it hadn't shown up in the eBay listings yet. Lucky me.

What do you guys think, keep or sell? I already have an 032ave as far as a midsize saw goes. Also have a Mac 250, Homie SXL-925, and the 111S in the bigger range. Having an old "saw blade and log" logo Stihl saw would be neat, but I'm trying to reduce my informal collection.

The weight can't be too bad. They still sell 051's and 08S's in Brazil. :)

The weight is just about right for bucking >20" logs. I like the exhaust tones of the older engines, but there are enough 041s out there, that I don't feel that it will be a desireable collectable for years to come.
Then again, you may rather reduce your collection by an 032ave after you run the 041.

These are the saws I learned on. Just can't kill them. When one does finally die, the customer is heartbroken.
Pulse hose, intake gaskets {make sure bottom of manifold is flat},
good ignition wire, {wears where it enters case}, timing on the money. AND blue loctite on all case screws.

My father had one until about 8 years ago when someone walked off with it. He loved the saw but it vibrated the heck out of your hands. His was the Farm Boss model w/o chain brake.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Turns out that this saw is the only one I've ever bought off eBay that didn't need any parts. Started up on the fourth pull. Best vintage chainsaw sound I've ever heard this side of a Poulan 306A.

I don't know what it is, but even after all the 111Ses, vintage Homelites, and slick little Poulan XXVs, these old Stihls still have the best feel of any saw I've used.

Congrats on the good buy. It appears to be in pretty good shape and by the sounds of it, it's still pretty strong.
