Other than the odd cord here and there, and the 11 cord we burn, I gave up on making money on firewood.

I just started the Darkman on his yearly firewood project. He's only got a few cord done so far.. sorta slacking actually. I'm gonna break out the salted whip when he shows up tomorrow though!

Nice pics by the way..

Thanks for the advice, maybe I'll take the 525 and just try to store 15 to 20 cord of good seasoned wood around for some C-a-s-h. It would satisfy my urge and keep some green flowing through my hands. That other idea just sounds good on paper.

C if I wanted to get paid right, $15o hr minimum for that setup

I agree with treeslayer on this one.

Pricing depends on your geographic area, but if I only charged $700 for that work, I'd be kicking myself knowing I could be making more $ doing another job somewhere else.

I charge more to take the wood. (Its more work, therefore more $$$).

So you took too many smoke breaks... :D

That's the great thing about working for and by yourself, eh Dan? You got that option to smoke em when you want to. I only work for myself on average ten days a month, the company I work for comes down on you hard for smoking in front of clients and in their yards! Christ we aren't brain surgeons.

You need more info

Hey I do a lot of estimates and to do one right you need some info. You say you have 7 hours on the job. Then you say you have 7 hours on the chipper. You don't say what type of chipper or how you managed to provide wood to feed it since no time could have been spent on that as 7 hours is all the time you had. Furthermore most of us in the tree bidness can't be bothered handling firewood and would never put fence material through a chipper! Or trees near a property line or beach without first passing a detector over it. If you charge $100 an hour and can justify it to the customer that's all that matters.

Good dig on that one. I suppose the answer can be found in the time spent on labor plus the rental of the chipper. Here in Canada that chipper would rent for $300.00 a day div by 8 =$37.50 + 12% HST + labor rate. In this case it is clear that although 7 hours of time was spent on site there is a couple hours spent in prep and final. That being said a (day rate) charge would be an easy estimate. In my case for ground work $750 + HST a day for one man plus truck (not bucket and not chipper) and tools saws, peavey etc. I would certainly go on the high side for what you have done.
Thanks for having me.

On the fire wood thing, I sell it, do really well with it too. I sell a load for 75, no stacking, just run and dump. Last year I sold around 10g's in firewood. This year, have my 19y/o son running it, he gets 8 an hour, got him an f-350 dump and an old LaFont 5way splitter, should kick it up a notch! I don't count on that money, just an extra.

I donate un-split wood to needy families here in the community we used to be a logging town but seasonal tourism moved in and the industries faded away. Many of my clients want to keep the bulk wood but I probably dump 75-80 cords a year on friends.

That is cool. What a great way to help in your community . I like it and will keep it in mind . I hope in the future my little business will be in a position to do the same .
