Yeah Yeah. Very musty moldy like. I thought it was because it's been sitting outside wet or something.

Cool profile pic.

looks like sassafras to me--the split one. sassafras is much lighter than hickory, but not nearly so light as poplar. and way harder to split. if that's hickory it ain't the kind we grow down here.

can't tell by the color in your pics. sass has a deep furrowed bark like that, orange on the underside of the bark and the wood has a greenish/tan tinge to it.

and it splits just like that.

poplar is very light in color and splits silly easy. turns green with age (check out the hidden wood in your antiques for greened poplar.)

Glad someone had the nads to say it cause that's exactly what it is. I was gonna say it but was scared of getting persecuted.lol But it's HICKORY.

Hard to beleive that a man that freely admits to owning an electric chainsaw, and a Homelite at that, would be scared to say ANYTHING!

Gonna point some rep your way and see if it sticks!

Well...if it's Hickory...then thats even better. Taking pics and video tomorrow. I'm guessing 2 cords worth. Too bad I don't own a truck yet.

Hickory is a good burning wood, The only thing is it will pop and crakle. Don't keep the stove door open too long as a hot piece may pop out. I do love the smell of hickory burning though, also like to grill with it.

heres norway maple:yoyo: tom trees

Only hickory common around here is shagbark, and that definitely is not shagbark. The bark sure looks like tulip poplar to me. Never cut or split a tulip poplar though, quaking poplar is more common around here; mostly in swampy areas where you'd find weeping willows and swamp maples mixed in.

The tulip poplar and smooth bark hickory do tend to look similar, the telltale difference is the weight and how easily it splits. Based on split pieces and their lack of stringy material all over I would assume they busted apart very easily. I'm in the poplar camp on this one.

Yep, i cut and split some hickory last year that had been on the ground a couple years. Shagbark, didnt look anything like that inside...and stringy as heck splitting. Not hickory.
