This past Saturday and Sunday across the street from OUR lot that has OUR trucks with OUR signs and OUR phone number written all over them ANOTHER tree service was doing a job. We didn't even get a call. A bunch of hacks. Three guys ( two of which appeared hammered ) , a bucket/chip truck, a 30 year old pickup and a chipper from the dark ages ( kinda like mine, just way more beat up and rusty ) , no hard hats or PPE of any sort were just crashing trees all over the joint. By the way they were processing through the job one would think it was a no haul. No clean up as it comes down, just cut and crash. Except they brought their chipper which makes me assume they're cleaning it up...eventually. I get a call from the owner this morning ( the company's located 75 miles away ) asking if I want firewood. I told him no. Not that we couldn't use it ( or even make $ off of it ) , but I wanted him left with the problem simply out of spite. I'm brand new to running my own show, and we just got the lot a month ago but it's inconceivable that our neighbor didn't know what we do. I'm just pissed we didn't get a call. So, would you take the wood, or let 'em sleep in their bed?

I would ask him if they were blind, a#$ holes, or if your nieve in the fact that they like you.

I'd leave the wood. You may get some pleasure out of seeing it sit there. We get calls from time to time to finish someone else's job. We're polite and tell the folks that we finish what we start and they need to have the contractor do the same. The only exception was a guy that paid before final clean-up. The tree guy disappeared with the cash; never to be seen again.

Spite does not make a person any money.

Good point. I kinda doubt he woulda paid and our firewood operation won't really ramp up till next season ( lack of fiscally logical hauling abilities this year ). Hopefully a new trailer and larger dump in next year's budget will change that.

Hate to say

But, Blake sounds like you need to buck up buddy. Business is business. You could have made money with the wood should have been able to see through the bs to make good on it. What you saw happens all the time, no explanation for it.

Yup, sure does. I sold cars for the last 8 years. (Done with that now.) I've had in-laws and other close FAMILY and FRIENDS not even mention to me that they are buying or looking for a car.

Yep let it lay. I would not even consider touching it for the business owner. Now if the property owner ask you to do the clean up job yes I would take the job and leave the place perfectly clean. Word of mouth is great for business But I would Never clean up for a competitor. I just hope the customer is happy in the end.

But if Joe Schmoe's, "I cut trees" service ends up losing their azz hauling all the wood on this job maybe they'll go back to where they came from, thereby making more work for me in my area.

Just to clarify it was the business owner not the HO. Would been a different story then.

Let it lay, I wouldn't get involved with piss poor competition, could be a setup. Like you said, if it was the homeowner offering you work, that's different.

Gotta agree that 'business is business'. I've found that azzholes' money is just as green as everyone else's. You can't always 'sweat the small stuff', you have to know when to just walk away and forget about it. You're probably NOT your own boss because you enjoy stress.:agree2:

I'd offer to haul the wood for money, tell them that it is a mess, and a lot of work.

Spite does not make a person any money.

DITTO JPS,,,,bang the guy for removing the mess !!!! Money is money.....maybe next time the guy will call you,,, or refer you !!! word of mouth works wonders......if he doesn't want to pay,,, then you have your spite view... JMHO

I agree with Nailsbeats & JeffL. It's not worth the money for what it could do for your reputation and anything else I don't know about.

MY BAD,,, missed this one.... By all means, go and talk to the home owner.... tell the owner about the call you got... give him a price for cleaning it up... this is where word of mouth comes in... owner will dis the original guy,,, and talk about you saving his a$$...

What a hoot!

I wood've had some fun with him on the phone.

"No, I don't need the wood, but it is interesting to know they were with a company. I thought it was a bunch of drunken guys adding to their unemployment checks on the side after gathering inspiration from watching too many Ax Men reruns."

I say let it lay...perhaps the HO will eventually give you a buzz. You never know what arrangement they might have reneged on. They're probably hoping to get out of some work, or save a trip back to finish.

I don't think they are doing it out of the kindness of their collective heart....you can bet on that.

That's not a bad idea.
