MY BAD,,, missed this one.... By all means, go and talk to the home owner.... tell the owner about the call you got... give him a price for cleaning it up... this is where word of mouth comes in... owner will dis the original guy,,, and talk about you saving his a$$...

I do like this idea except for the fact that now MY trucks are on HIS disaster area of a site. This might make for good relations with the HO but we're on a VERY busy street and I worry passerby might snub their nose at the disaster that's been plaguing this lawn for the last 3 days. Not the best advertising for my business.

sounds like the home owner paid up front....1/3 to 1/2 the job... now the hack is trying to bail on the job un finished.....i can't imagine a guy not coming back,, if he hasn't been paid.....

he got some money ,, and is running and laughing to the bank !!!!!!! singing the sucker song !!! JMHO

But, Blake sounds like you need to buck up buddy. Business is business. You could have made money with the wood should have been able to see through the bs to make good on it. What you saw happens all the time, no explanation for it.

In my experience there is usually some explanation for it.. Maybe they thought you would be too high. Or you were too new. Or you just were not worth a crap. They thought something.

I assume that since this guy was from so far out of town that it had to be a friend of a friend deal. He doesn't advertise anywhere near here or even in this state for that matter. The last time I saw him was last year when we were working halfway between his hometown and ours. Once again, hodge podged crew of outta shape men, no PPE and a mess left at the site.

i get your point....

but on the other hand,,,,,, why did the guy call another tree service ???,,, if your across the street ???? price of course !!! and you see what it got him....

i think on a busy street,, some people saw who did the original job.... but,, on that same street,, some people are going to drive by,,,,and see a tree service,, on one side of the street,, and a sh#t job on the other side....they are going to associate that with your biz ... thats not good advertising either...

kind of a double edged sword... JMHO

....picking up after flyby night hacks once again."
"Don't become a victim..call your local dedicated professionals."

Even #######s have friends. My guess is that the people performing the the work there were friends with your neighbors or came highly recomended from a friend.

I was going to say something along those lines. I think you should get involved but maybe just to introduce yourself to the client.
I lost a few jobs to people on my own road for many diferent reasons. Some cause I was to exspensive and a few for spite. It is not something to lose sleep over but like I said if you think you want to, do something.
Truth is you have allready profitted from the job you didn't do but I am not going to tell you how, I want you to tell me. It may not be money but its not as bad as you think. Besides not everybody in the world is as excited about your business as you are. I know they should be but what can you do?

If it was me I might have fired up my tractor, hucked it on the dump and if I didnt want it, taken it to some friend or associate that wants wood and then they would owe me a favor. Thats assuming its good wood. But I've got a tractor, if I had to do it by hand F that.

Re: what would you do

Hi Blakes, What would I do and what would I feel are and should be two different things. I would be well more than peevish. What I would like to do I dare not put in print. What I would do is this: As my old man used to say (not do as much as say) you get more flies with honey than with vinegar. Assume that it goes as poorly for the people paying the bill across the street as you think it might. Then put yourself in their place (and we have all made poor decisions and mistakes) if you laugh at them and so on you will never educate them and get their business. What you want or should want, I think, since you are in business, is their work for your pay scale and on your terms (hassle factor). Educate them. When the people doing the work leave the place a mess then educate them- the owners not the other tree service company (term used loosely). If you can give them the best price you can and still make money (you don't owe them a favor, but don't f*** them simply out of spite). Talk to them like a dutch uncle and show them how your price and work ethic is the best. And like a dog that at the first growled is now wagging its tail and just wanting to be petted you've got a friend for life. Nothing ventured nothing gained. And if it don't work, well I owe you a beer. Eljefe p.s. and if their check bounces, well amigo, that is why God made chippers, ain't it!

You already lost the job so now look at what is better for you. If the company wants to pay you to haul it then thats fine . If not tell them they can dump on your lot . Clean chips go in a pile ,wood is all blocked 18/20" no rakings. If they dont like that then haul it 70 miles away.

I have lived in my current neighborhood for 3 years now. A really nice elderly lady lives right across the street and my wife and kids talk to her on a regular basis - kinda like a grandma figure to the kids.

I park my work trucks on the street from time to time. There's no way she isn't aware that I do tree work part-time. Last year, she hired a hack tree service to 'trim' (top) an ash tree in her back yard. I was appalled at both her lack of interest in asking me to do the job and in her having the tree topped rather than pruned correctly or removed all together.

I never asked her why she didn't talk to me about it. At first, it bothered me a bit but, after a while, I figured she probably had a long-term connection with the other guy. He's been operating in my town for a long long time. You just have to let it go and remember that friends and family come before neighbors in most cases.

Blakemaster shouldn't feel slighted by not getting asked to do the job and, as a good neighbor, should offer to assist the property owner if asked to help get the mess cleaned up. It will only help him to befriend the property owner in his time of need and it could likely hurt his image if he chooses to shun him because of pride. Just my 2 cents... Of course, Blake should get paid to help the neighbor - I wouldn't do it for free unless I really knew him well and wanted to 'mend fences' so to speak between neighbors.
