Took muffler off 031AV today while cleaning and the whole thing is sealed-up where one can not go inside. If I shook it there was something loose inside of it. Almost sounded like a screw rattling in there. Tried to shake out but no success. Any ideas? Put it back and ran saw. Seems to exhaust just fine regardless what is in there!

Something loose. Something that shouldn't be there.

Not sure about the 031, but some mufflers are two piece and the bolts run thru posts inside the muffler. After extended use these posts can rattle loose and wear the metal thin. You may be able to fix it by taking it apart and shim the looseness with a washer or two.

response to loose screws

I had an 032 AV with the same issue. At least on mine, I was able to pull the muffler cover off with two allen head screws, and inside were two more screws holding the screen in place. One had fallen out. A little loctite and putting it back in place did the trick.

May not be the same thing. I had an overheat problem with my MS310. Dealer pulled the muffler, it rattled, he replaced it.

I picked up the saw and the old muffler, took the trouble to hacksaw it open.

There is a baffle inside that the two mounting bolts go through, pull the bolts and the baffle is free to rattle but won't do it if you can get the bolts back in. New ones must have some means of hold the baffle from rattling before installation.
