When do you guys bring your wood inside?

I put about 5 cord in the barn once we have had a couple good frosts. Usually the end of October. Typically the bugs are very cold by then. The wood goes from the barn to the wood carrier to the stove.

Same here. Basic rule of thumb is after a couple of real hard frosts.

We hole up about 5 cords in our old barn, which is connected to the house. The horses that once occupied the old stalls are long gone and we stack our wood in them. One stall is devoted to quick burning "woofer wood" (so called because it burns real quick: hemlock, punky hardwoods, poplar/cottonwood) and the other devoted to higher btu woods for deep winter.

It's nice because I can grab a day's worth of fuel in the a.m. while wearing my slippers regardless of what the weather's doing outside. Our set up was perfect for last winter when NH got 14 feet of snow. I knew lots of people who ran out of wood - that is accessible wood. A friend of mine in Union NH had a shortage come late Feb. Had plenty of wood, but it was all under a thick blanket of snow.

I will probably throw a bunch in the basement in a couple weeks. I try to wait for a few sunny days so the wood is dry on the outside then start tossing it in. I am going to try to get about 10 cord in the basement this fall. Digging wood out of the snow in the middle of january is not for me!!

My basement is old ( stone foundation) with a walk out. After a good cold spell I bring in just about the whole seasons worth. Still cold down there, but much nicer than going outside for stone cold wood. I do spray for bugs and try to bust off as much bark as I can before it gets piled inside.

I bring my wood in the house by the armload as I need it. I HATE bugs of every type, and won't risk it whatsoever. The outdoor cockroach population around here is bad enough that it gives me the willies. When it gets real cold I store around half a cord at a time on the back porch. When it is just mild enough for the bugs to think about it, it all stays in the wood pile, away from the house.

I am starting to bring in smaller dry wood. I have some stuff that has been baking in the hot sun since April and is dry as a popcorn fart. I figure if it's dry dry stuff theres nothing bugs want in it. Anything that looks buggy stays out away from the house until I am ready to burn it, then it goes right into the fire.

I also like haveing a bunch of wood inside and not out in the snow, thats a pain in the dead of January.

October typically. When it gets cold enough to not sweat your butt off throwing wood through the window. But first I have to go and load it into the back of my truck behind the barn, then into the basement. Can't wait to get a loader tractor someday!

Usually, I keep a 2-3 week supply (usually moved in just before a weather event) in my unheated garage when I have to obtain my supply from a pile that has less protection.

I don't care to bring very much in the house. I keep some really good, really dry stuff near the front step under a tarp and on the covered front porch. for just in case I dont want to go out back or to the side of the house. I might leave a few pieces in the house over night if absolutely sure nothing is going to crawl out of them. Those I'll use either in the middlle of the night or in the morning to bring things back up before the kids wake up.

One time I had some Mullbery that was carved out by carpenter ants, unknowingly, roaches had taken up residence in a few pieces. I put on some of this for a slow burn. And I went to bed. They must not have quite caught. It just made smoke, little heat. Needless to say when I woke up to tend it I found hundreds of the buggers inside the stove. They weren't roaming around in there. They were concentrated on the fresh air opening at the front. I actually think there were enough of them that they shut off most of the draft keeping the fire from catching. It didn't take long to get the door shut.

Anything questionable stays outside till it is time to use it. They don't pay rent ? they aren't staying here.

Exactly, KsWoodsman. There are bugs in most all wood. Just because you cant see them doesnt mean they arent there. Anyone that cuts much wood has to see that, especially in this area.

Already have 2 stacks on the back wall of our garage. Will increase that to 3 rows before the real winter weather sets in. About 10 ft long -5 ft high. Have been doing this for 30 years now. (can't believe it's been 30 yrs!!!) Little if any bug problems. I think the mice might actually eat some of the larger critters. Seems like the only bugs that come to life in the house are the occaisional "stink" bug(?) -dime sized hard shelled things that kind of walk around slowly -the cats like to play with them.

woodguy were around :)

as long as the wood is good not punky or anything im still gonna bring in a ton of it. i figure theres a tradeoff with everything. i dont mind a few bugs really when it comes down to either a few bugs in the house and i just walk in the cellar in my socks to grab some wood or i gear up and brave the elements.

All outside

Only wood I bring in is for my real fireplace. Almost all wood has critters. I noticed there are quite a few folks here on the "I-395" posse. I was next door today at my BIL house and he's got 4 big oaks (about 3 cords) that have been down for about 14 months. They blew down and the majority of the trees are suspended just above the ground. Too bad Sat here is gonna rain. It's always nice to come across a score like that!:chainsaw:

I've been known to go out there at night wearing only my underwear just to get a couple pieces of wood. :D We don't have any close neighbors so my wife doesn't mind it too much.
:D:D i've been known to do that a time or too..

we keep a rick....er half cord? still trying to get used to this cord thing, around here for years everyone stopped using the 'cord' term,....after reading through this site the last two weeks, guess i got to change my ways.

wood burner is in garage, so i keep a 1/2cord about a weeks worth inside, with 3 cord right outside the garage, tarped and covered well. the rest is WAY out back and everyweekend no matter what i go get a load, can't get if it snows. and the snow plow truck always has a full level load on it for plowing. best get to spliting though....soon......Oct is wood splitin'stacking month.......

uhhh oh were supposed to get 3-6 inches of rain friday and sat. if i woulda known that i woulda started bringing it in. well at least i got a month or so for it to dry again :dizzy:

We are to get rain from now through Saturday night. Was able to get the last cord in today. Not stacked, but under the porch roof.

Never been this far ahead on firewood before. 6 cords in and 1/2 a cord seasoning outside for spring burning, if needed.

Started our first fire today. Another season under way.
