. Itemize the costs. Crazy Canuck, or any other Canadien's out there, Could you explain how your health Insurance is payed for up there? Is everyone taxed or just employers or how does that work? .

Paid out of general tax revenues, including income taxes. Everyone has basic coverage. Some companies have supplementary plans that look after dental, meds, physio etc and other nice to haves not paid for by government plans. Sometimes these are part of a benefit package, other times the employee pays all or part of the premium as I found out two years ago before I declined what they thought was a generous offer.

I'm done defending miself for what I pay him. Wages might be higher in other areas but they are not here and I'm paying this guy more money than any other groundsman in the area. For the record I sat down with him today and explained to him how and when raises will come about and he couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe I was being so generous. I can't believe some of you are trashing me for paying higher wages than any other company in the area. But like I said I'm done with this conversation.

some groundsman here can't tie a bowline, can't use a saw without burying it in the dirt, can't begin to sharpen a saw and so on. They complain about "only" 12hr.. If I had my way they would be gone, but something is better than nothing I guess.

except they would have never made to 12 an hour if they couldnt even do that. They'd of started at 9 or 10. (no exp) and earned their way up the pay scale.

CC -sounds to me like you're being fair, pay em what theyre worth!

I'm sorry, but the guy I work for, I have to be there at 7:30 / 7:45 depending on where we work. I am almost always there on time. When I am late because something is going on, I usually know about it at least a day or two in advance and let them know. It's just the right thing to do.

Fine, continue to pay what you are, and do not be surprised when he moves on to something better, either less work for the same money, or better money. The lower end of the pay scale results in a very transient work/labour force, and if you recognize this plus the fact you generally do not attract the cream of the crop to these positions, OK.

who wanted to know how you could live on 12.00 an hr? try living on minimum wage in nys! or even 7.00 an hr and supporting 3 kids and a husband who was laid off plus your household expenses! it sucks but ive done it, and let me tell you sometimes it aint pretty!
