Went to put my hands on a new saw to help make up my mind on which model to purchase.

Took along my old Stihl 019 with a 16" bar. The dealer (who owns the place) tells me just put a longer bar on the 019 instead of going to the weight of the MS 361. It would be just fine and have plenty of power.

Have I missed the pumpkin wagon. I can stall the small bar now and with a 20 or bigger I don't know if it would even have enough power to run the chain through air.

This guy couldn't fix a lawnmower after nearly 9 months and nearly a thousand in repairs and it still wouldn't start. Set the valve lash myself and now it runs like a champ and he is an authorized dealer of the mower and a Briggs dealer and still doesn't know how to repair the mower.

This is why I will not use the dealers in town.

Thanks for all the input on the saw choice. I am leaning toward the MS 361 and the Husky 372 XP. Now just find one in a price range that I can live with. Checking Ebay but don't trust everyone there and checking the ads here. I am sure that a good one with my name on it is just around the corner.

Perspective

I think there are more customers who want something for nothing than there are dishonest dealers. :monkey:

That said, I wish you the best in your saw search.:biggrinbounce2:

I agree to a point. I have no problem paying for a service as I am self employed myself. I have to deal with people wanting something for nothing everyday.

I am not trying to steal or chisel a person out of a saw. I am trying to make an intelligent decision on information gathered from people that have been there done that.

This dealer was not asked for a price for the repair, nor was he beaten down on the price, nor did I take it back for him to make it right. If he couldn't do it right the first three times he tried I am sure he couldn't on the fourth time.

I thank everyone for all the information that has been given and sharing with a beginning wood cutter. If I have given a perception of a cheap skate then I apologize that is not my intention.

Hmmm.... there is no 20 inch bar you can put on an 019... it uses the 3005 mount...

Lakeside, my point exactly. This is a dealer and he doesn't know that you might not be able to do as he suggests.

Perhaps he just doesn't want to deal with me.

Anyway the search continues and the offers are being considered.

You sound fair minded. I was just pointing out there are great dealers available (right here). Like you I have not found one locally. Very frustrating. The saws you are considering are favorites of many members.;) Glad you are here!

But, should I need assistance, I am going to buy from a site sponsor or member of this forum. Lots of good people here with massive personality issues.:jester:

I called my 5 "local" dealers recently about getting my beat up 038s pressure tested before rebuilds........... All were asked: "If I bring you in the powerheads stripped down with muffer, carbs, clutch, flywheel off how much to pressure test?

1) A "We don't do that, we just install a new cyl/piston". WTF? Q What if it still has a leak and it fries the new parts? A ??????????????? husky/sthil dealer

2) A "It will cost just as much for a new saw so we don't do that, what kind of saw are you looking for?" husky/stihl dealer

3) A "We don't have the tools to do that" husky/stihl dealer

4) A "About 1/2 hour labor (each), $35". stihl dealer

5) A "Bring it on over won't cost much, if it's all stripped down and it needs we can pop the seals in right away too, I think they are in stock...." Old time stihl dealer.

No offense to people who sell/own Huskys but which one am I going to? Which one should I support with my bussiness even if it's a few more miles away?

BTW these are the only local dealers that sell either stihl and/or husky besides TSC and Home Despot.............

P.S. have thought about buying a vacuum/pressure pump and making blockoffs for intake/exhaust.........but I think #5 above should get a little business

That would depend on how much #5's "not much" is. Definitely though, number 4 or number 5 should get the business.

Just saw the sig and had to rep yah
:ices_rofl:

Currently my R&D dept. is "Fisherizing" an ms192T, and am working on a
"24 bar to fit it, but am having trouble making that pmn61 chain to work
on my patented "maglev" bar/chain system, as the junk chain gets too
brittle when the liquid nitrogen is applied to the bar, and shatters when the saw revs over 26,000 rpms, so we might have to fall back on our beefier
.404 setup with a 10 pin sprocket.
Also when the saw revs to top rpms, the physics involved gets a little
tricky, and I cannot understand, because I am not an engineer, but just
a simpleminded moron, so I leave that to our engineers in our R&D dept.

But any way, we should have a 24" bar to fit your 019, as that saw has
plenty of power to run it an any milling application, just paypal me $300
bucks{canadian}, and my parts dept. will hook you up.

Do you have 10" picco bars for pruning with my 056 too?:jester:

Well, at the risk of spammin', I won't name my local dealer here. But he's extremely knowledgable & honest. I've done business w/him for nearly 25 years now.

Would not hesitate sending a customer to him. (I have several times)

Just had to post that there's at least one good one out there.

Only in Kentucky.:D

There are a lot of GREAT dealers ou there. And there are a lot of REALLY CRAPPY dealers too. We are primarily a mower shop (cuz corn and chainsaws don't mix and the cows run before I get the saw started!).

Anyway. Power Equipment comes first but you'd have to be a complete moron not to help people out with their saws. We honestly get a lot of junk in to work on but their isn't a thing I can do about it.

If I were looking for a piece of equipment and had access (like you do) to the dealers here on AS I'm sure that one or more of them would be willing to set you up with a piece of equipment at a reasonable price.

Keep looking for a good local dealer and if you cannot find one...try a different brand....or move. lol
