I would use bracing if you're going to try and save the tree. Ask them if removal is an option. That is a really large tree for the area it is set in. You don't want to incurr a liability later on.

I have to agree with bracing the existing defects too. Especially since your take is that it was caused by snow loading and you get that on a regular basis.

IMO if there is damage from a failure a good lawyer could find you at fault for not designing the system properly if you donot have the bracing in.

So you guys dont think that installing a dynamic cable 2/3 of the way up will stabilize this tree enough(pictures asap) :dizzy:

Matt, if it were all sound but with some included bark/questionable unions them Dynamic cable installed with no tension would be dandy. You say it is cracked. Dynamic systems are good because they allow the tree to continue to develop in response to stress while minimizing the upper end of stress loads. When you have cracks everything changes. You have to stop movement at the cracks or they will continue to crack. Your options are to brace at the cracks and use non dynamic cable (If you install synthetic (polyester) taut without shock absorbers it starts acting like steel) or brace and use static cable low and dynamic high or cut it down etc. If you just put in dynamic with it already cracked it is going to have continued problems and you are going to be easliy blamed for doing things halfway.

By Best Practice standards, if you brace you should cable. So it is best to sell it asa package or not do anything.

If you are concerned enough to have the waiver, then you should do the system to the minimal of Best Practice.

The reason for cable and brace is that when you but the bracing in you are shifting the movement point up the tree, maybe to a place where the tree has not developed enough reaction wood to handle it.

I would still probably go with a dynamic system over the brace, but then that is guessing without seeing the tree.
