I am in northern Wisconsin, and am looking to down some decent sized white pine to open the driveway and yard, and have them sawed into interior paneling. How long after they are down to I have to worry about bugs getting in them? Thanks.

I don't have a scientific answer for you. My personal experience says not too long. I've had logs go months before getting borers in their, some a day or two. The other culprit to watch out for in the warm summer months is blue staining. I'd get the stuff cut, stacked and stickered as quick as you can for optimal results.

Bluee stain is introduced by engravers and in my mind it would add value to your sawn planks. Get the bark off paint the ends and you should be good to go for several months.

old trick/pine

After they are sawn spray them lightly with clorox bleach while they are fresh cut so they don't stain then sticker and stack. If you want them to stain, bat poop or mouse poop lightly sprinkled on the baords as they are stacked will make a nice blue stain in a few months if air dried slowly indoors. Try www.woodmagazine.com and look at the fininshing forum for other tricks.

This time of year is bad for Pine to sit around for long as boring insects will infestate pretty fast leaving behind eggs that could hatch when you have it on the wall. But this is no biggy as the bugs have nowhere to go after that except in your soup.
Likewise, as others indicated, stain and the holes that are left by the insects can add character to the wood. Much like Dorido eaten Doug Fir which looks more like wood than wood does.

It's a sultry 69 degrees here in my apatment, but a storm is blowing in from the east which should cool things down. I don't have any hair conditioning so I'll just open the fridge.
I guess we can't derail this thread can we?
