Huge asset, worth some care. See Mulching in my sig line.

When was it climbed last?

Are there any black streaks on the trunk?

IL has oak wilt--keep your sweet tree in tiptop shape!

I got a nice big bur oak in the county ROW and two big red elm in the front yard, several spruce and doug-fir of significant size, and a couple large walnut in back. A couple sugar and Norway maples that are medium-large. Several dozen small ones that I am training to grow straight and tall. The property was an orchard way back when a d the remnant population of malus sp. are are in hospice care. Slowly but surely I'm getting all the box elder out.

My parents have a giant catalpa that everyone loves. Five years ago we measured the trunk at over 21' circumference (measured just below lowest limb below 4.5'). These pictures were taken 2 days before peak bloom (about June 12 every year):

Behind it you can see part of the canopy of the much taller triplet of pin oaks, also very much admired in the neighborhood.

I returned every leaf as mulch for the first few years, I climbed and lightly pruned it the 2nd winter [11 yrs ago]. I keep it somewhat away from the power lines. [and do not let their minions near it {no offense intended}] I watch the tertiary branching for dieback like a hawk. No black streaks, have seen oak wilt attack, and am trying to be the best guardian in central Illinois.

We have a 7' diameter Redwood about 30' from the kitchen window. There are a couple of 9' diameter ones near the bottom of my property. If you stand under trees that large it seems that we are only care takers and don't really own anything.

About those bricks...

Are you near Menard County? I hope to be up there in a month or two.

I am smack dab in the middle of Peoria, probably about an hour North.
First round is on me. Bricks?

Thanks for the postings and esp. the pics. Keep em comming.

And when you climb them you feel like a small speck in their existence.

I volunteered to deadwood two bur oaks in Athens south of peoria...260+ years old; they were cored so the rings were counted. i thought climbing them would be an honor...every big old tree climb is a rec climb, to some extent.
