How many of you guys skip lunch?

I usually buy a hotdog at Quick Trip for breakfast and eat lunch when I finish working. That is if I eat lunch. I will bring a lunch a lot of times if I know I am on an all day job. I always bring enough for my help to eat too. Sometimes we will go out to lunch if we are traveling between jobs but we usually eat lunch on the job if we eat.

Also has a lot to do with what time of year it is too.

In the Winter we will often take a lunch break, go somewhere where it is warm and eat a nice hot lunch to warm up.

It can get 110+ degrees here in the Summertime and I have worked a week straight in 103-106 temps. When it's that hot I will pack my cooler I have for the crew with cold cuts and gatoraid, maybe a little melon or fruit. Usually the cold cuts go untouched. We will take a break in the airconditioned truck for about a half hour at lunch time but I find that that if I break for lunch, go to a nice airconditioned restaurant and eat a big lunch I'm through for the day. Like I said, I normally bring a cooler for the crew with cold cuts and gatoraid (although I hardly ever touch the food) but swap out the food and gatoraid for cold beer for me and the crew when the day is done!

Of course we used to take a lunch at the gentleman's club when I worked back in Atlanta sometimes. When we had a light day we would finish our job by lunchtime, go to the club where they had a $1 buffet, little customers in the noon hour, eat lunch and drink a beer surrounded by beautiful women... But that was a lifetime ago it seems...

yeah I usually skip lunch. I'm usually trying to stay ahead of the guys and keep them busy. The guys grap lunch when they have a minute. We work 8 till 4 and they get paid for 8 hours lunch break or not. Usually they will take 20 min for lunch and I'll eat something while going to dump chips. when its hot we will take breaks around 10 and 2 as well and If I'm out I'll pick up some gatorades.... Mike

i never skip lunch, even if i'm not hungry. getting away from work for 1/2 hr /hour is vital to sanity, since i dont own the company i work for and the 'foreman' is a slimy pedophile. sometimes i work for other ppl on a 'by the job' basis where when i get the work done i go home paid in full. sometimes i skip lunch then if the end is in sight

our lunch breaks are as early as 11 and as late as 2. It all depends on what is going on in job. it is against the law to not provide a lunch break. It is to be atleast 1/2 hour per 8 hrs work day. If on a job that will take all day we call delivery for some cheesteaks or sandwhiches or pizza. If doing multiple jobs in a day we stop somewhere in between like a diner and sit down and have a nice platter of food. The places we stop know us make sure we are in and out in less than a half hour. I tell them that the first time we "try" their place. If they can provide speedy service we visit them again.

On average we shut down for about an hour to relax and eat. When we do crane jobs we pack lunch and each guy takes turns eating. We dont stop the job on those days.

i pack a lunch everyday usally 2 or 3 sandwiches andsome granolla bars too, when its real hot usaly stay away from the sandwhiches till days done, but i need to eat or im out by 3 the worse part is im 155 skinny as #### gotta eat though!!

my mentor didnt eat all day and if you seen him take a drink of water it has to be dam near 100 use to call him camel mike!
its all good he called me waterboy

My boss and I did the same thing back in the day, except the $1 was for slipping through this little slot in the plexy-glass.

I rarely used to skip lunch, but the last few years it seems I skip more than I take. On the other hand, if I can slip in something then I will.. sometimes as late as 2pm though.

if i skip lunch i pass out...

i'm up to 4,000 calories a day on the busy days, sometimes more.

The crew and I like to eat around 1 or 2 in the afternoon, hopefully the job is all done and we can just chill. Ice water / Gatorade and a nap in the heat of the summer.

LT...

I feel your hunger. I'm hypoglycemic and if get hungry I start to shake, get dizzy, sweat, and my knees buckle. Not great when you're holding a saw.

As for lunch, me and my climber always bring our food. Good food, too. My climber usually brings last night's dinner leftovers - his wife is Portuguese and a wicked cook - and lots of fruit and mixed nuts. I usually bring a big container of basmati rice and veggies mixed with some beans or meat, with humus or baba ghanoush, and lots of hot sauce. A couple of homemade power bars, apples and bananas, and a homemade energy drink made from frozen fruit, yogurt, soy milk, and fruit juice.

Maybe twice each summer we get a burger, and we always regret it right after. But we drink excellent espressos almost every morning on the way to work and we eat a lot of good dark imported chocolate.

Ya gotta live, baby.

I tend to get VERY grouchy if I don't eat lunch. Doesn't have to be a huge meal by any means, but it has to be something. On the other hand though, if I take too long to eat, or eat too much I don't want to go back to work. I prefer to eat on the run. If it's up in the tree, send it up... I eat what I want, chuck the rest and go back to what I was doing... no point sitting around. On the ground, eat what I can, and go back to work... I've worked for people in the past who like to eat, and then sit and read the paper for a while... I'm just sitting there waiting to go back to work, and when it finally comes time to do something I'm in no mood to do it.

Gee, think I will move to Quebec and join your crew :)
Seriously, the guys tend to eat lunch on regular basis, it is usually me that tends to skip. On other hand, I don't do nearly the physical work that I used to a few years ago either.

I munch Odwalla bars throughout the day. I usually see them on sale periodically, then buy a hundred, or fifty, or so, just grabbing handfuls and boxes. They fit easily in a pocket to take into the tree with me. Lots of flavors. Keeps my energy and focus up. Plus coffee.

Most of our jobs were residential removals, of which we did several stops per day.
We'd often get a break, when hauling the limbs and brush to another workers property, where he'd buck the good wood and sell or use it for his own use.

Midday, the boss would usually break for lunch at a local sit down and the rest of us brought our lunches. We'd often be in transition from one loc to another at that point in the day to eat our lunch, then move the trucks/equipment to the next jobsite.

I eat a very big breakfast and then skip lunch. If I eat lunch, I get groggy and want to take a nap at sixty feet. That usually is not too good for production work. If I'm running a big crew, I'll break them at noon and let them do what they want until one. For me, I can leave home at 156 pounds and return at 152. Great fun, tree work.

When I worked for someone else back in the day. I would never miss breakfast or lunch.

Now days I just eat dinner when I get home. I'll stop at a store between jobs and let the guys run in somewhere. Or let them go grab something. While they eat I'm sharping saws, making calls, etc.

I am with Sunrise Guy.

I have to eat some meat with breakfast tho to keep the hunger away. Read that somewhere many years ago and it works for me.

Ever go to the zoo after feeding time for the animals. Waste of money as they are all asleep. Tells you somethin.;)

I skip lunch, well sorta I do keep chocolate in the truck, been doing it so long its not a problem but I eat a big breakfast, have a feed when I get home, then have dinner then normally have a meal at about 10pm. Lunch isnt missed, just mixed up a bit. My capacity for food at the end of the day is pretty good and never ceases to suprise people. 2 large pizzas is easy work for me.
