Why do saws start to not cut straight.

this is probably wayyyyyy off...but when I was seeing curved cuts I realized I was trying for a faster cut and pushing it slightly....if I let IT do more of the work it did a better job than me, and cut straight. Clear as mud...o well....I haven't picked up a saw in two weeks* and my memory's so bad I probably just made that up.

*the dog and the saw are crying everytime I go to the farm lately..."CAN WE GO TOO!!!??? Unfortunately, neither are very helpful at calving time.

well i dont know what it all means, but i'll add my 2 cents
a couple of years ago i had the circle cut phenomenon going on. i know i am not the best filer, so i bought an oregon bench grinder to set all my chains back to "factory spec". now with all the cutters the same length, and all the rakers exactly the same height, and the angles as close to factory as i can get, i have very few problems. but i did notice the other day that by bucking cuts were not as square as they should be. could it be that my 10 year old bar is screwed up. it is only missing small bits of metal behind the tip. BUT PUT A DIFFERENT CHAIN ON AND IT CUTS STRAIGHT. but my conclusion is it is alot of things. are the angles the same from right to left? are the rakers all the same height in reference to the tooth? is the bar an old abused pile of crap? is the chain too loose on the bar?

Spencer. Its you chain. Grinders rarely sharpen right and left cutters at the same angle. I have never seen a chain come from a saw shop with the same top plate angles.

HA! And I thought it was just my imagination! :alien:

angles

i assume you guys know more about this than i do, but i just went out and got a chain, i cut a template of the left side cutter, and the put it ontop of the right side. if the angle is different it is less than 2 degrees. but honestly i cant see a difference, and im only on my second beer. while we are at it, what are the best angles to use on the grinder. i use stihl rs chain or the oregon equivalent. i have th cutting wheel at 60, and the vise at 30. what about vise tilt?

Ben, have you tried a Maxx grinder? The one I bought from Jeff is very consistant side to side. Jeff checks them out before sending them to the customer.
