Why only Muffler Mods, Why not Intake Mods?

Looking at a 361 at the dealer yesterday, I was struck by the smallness of the two small intake holes at the bottom of the filter cover.

In tuning theory, getting more airflow _into_ the system is as important as getting the airflow out of the system.

Without getting into racing saw aspects, I was just wondering if anyone has done any intake mods on their "work" saws...

many do...

The simplest test of any gains is take off you intake boxe and airfilter (put a large area stocking over the carb intake suported by a wire box to keep th e crud out). If you get gains, there is work to do...

how about most any builders woods port service, we deal with the entire intake tract and exhaust system. the stock filter setups will in most cases flow just fine when kept clean, that is something that has to be done anyway.
woods porting is aimed at the get dirty work saw, no shelf queen here!

Seems to me that the reasoning behind so many muffler mods is it's so easy to remove the muffler with only a couple of cap screws, do the work and blow out all the crud far away from the motor without risk of getting any debris where it doesnt belong. Besides there is that Government thing with them always trying to protect us from ourselves, that leaves a lot of potential in the muffler for some impressive gains. You start messing with the runners and ports etc.and you need to have the engine torn down to make sure not one shaving gets left behind. IMO most people aren't going to go that far.

manufacturers typically use the exhaust to detune the engine. dirtbikes and ATVs are like this and i assume saws are the same. a detuned muffler is an easy way for a manufacturer to avoid lawsuites by selling a crappy saw that you can easily mod and therefore eliminate their liability...

There's a point where your air filter is too exposed. The bigger the holes going in toward your air filter, the more crap can easily get in there and clog it. I've done a little shaving on my 044 fire saw's air filter cover, but only on the back, not the sides. I've seen other guys shave down the sides, and need to clean their air filters after each tank. I'll sacrifice a tiny bit gain in peak performance for long term performance.

Another good choice is the Max Flow filter for the bigger pro Stihls. Less restriction and more filter surface area.

I figured that it _must_ be happening but no one's talking about it...

Well, that's one way of doing it.

Picture of the piston during said test... ----> :blob2:

Nice vids on your website, by the way.

Would be nice to see some "before and after" type shots or times.

That's why you put a large stocking (panty hose type) over a wire frame...

While that might be true, it will lead to much name calling and ridicule. Such as:

"Ninny boy has got momma's stocking on his saw."

"Hey, nice saw but is not one of your feet cold?"

or

"Oh my goodness, I did not realize Nancy was cutting with us today."

That is why you should always use a thick flannel sock or better yet just stick an entire sock and steel toe boot set
up on there. Plus, it will match your outfit better, hopefully, maybe.:hmm3grin2orange:

I was actually thinking more of someone holding WOT and the increased air meaning increased fuel meaning increased speed meaning increased heat meaning <boom>...

Anyways.... got pix? :hmm3grin2orange:
