Why wedges rock!!!

What's a "hedge tree"? Is that a species? I keep hearing people talk about them, but I'm clueless as to what they are... To me a "hedge" is a line of shrubs that separates one yard from the next.

Here in North Texas we call them 'bodarks', which is southern English for 'bois d'ark'. They were originally only native to Texas and Oklahoma, but were planted elsewhere in fencerows to make hedges. Hence the new common names 'hedge tree' and 'horse apple'.

The Indians used the wood to make bows. It's good wood, but brings a whole new meaning to the term 'hardwood'.

I've never seen one as big as Sawinredeck cut down today, and if I do I hope nobody is asking me to cut it.

Well Log, thats a good description of the trees. They were planted during the dustbowl to prevent erosion, the thorns would keep cattle and horses in, and practicly nothing will kill them!!!

That was the biggest one I have come across myself!! Now, trust me here, if someone does ask you to drop one, RUN!!! I will try and get back over tomorow and get a pic of it, so ya'll don't think I am BSing you, but I tell you, this tree, and my screw up, scared me more than anything I have done in a LONG time!!!

HA! I have some pretty ugly stumps often enough, but thankfully I've never had a day as bad as Andy's, though it can happen to anyone.

Me too my good friend. I've got a huge maple in a friend's yard he wants down along with some firs next spring when things dry out around here. Hopefully I won't have a repeat of your day.

Maybe next time Andy has a big cutting project a bunch of us can go out there. Just to help and advise. We could all stand there in a circle and shout conflicting advice and wave our arms a lot and give him a dozen different reasons why whatever he's attempting to do won't ever work. And then go raid his refrigerator and drink all his beer.
