Here in North Texas we call them 'bodarks', which is southern English for 'bois d'ark'. They were originally only native to Texas and Oklahoma, but were planted elsewhere in fencerows to make hedges. Hence the new common names 'hedge tree' and 'horse apple'.
The Indians used the wood to make bows. It's good wood, but brings a whole new meaning to the term 'hardwood'.
I've never seen one as big as Sawinredeck cut down today, and if I do I hope nobody is asking me to cut it.
