Keep your backcut level. There's never a reason not to. Even on an extreme leaner, like over a river or something like that. Use a bore cut on a larger tree, and on a smaller tree, your saw should be able to keep up with it in the back cut.

A tree of the size you dealt with yesterday, I'd gone with the bore cut. It's a nice tool to have in your tool bag. But I wasn't there and friends don't say "told ya so" when they weren't there themselves. ;)

Fishhuntcutwood, I certainly agree with this. Well said. I was taught the same thing, that the back cut should be level. As fishhuntcutwood said, a level backcut allows for proper use of wedging. It also makes it easier to plunge cut from both sides on a large tree and end up on the same level.

Andy, I wouldn't be too afraid of the plunge cut. I would suggest using it on any tree large enough to support it (meaning the width of the bar isn't so great compared to the diameter of the tree that you cut right through the hinge etc.). You could easily practice plunge cutting on a tall stump. A great excuse to pull the saw out and have some fun!
