BAHAHAHAHA. now that was funny

Buddy, if you wanna work that hard for wood, stop on by, Ill hook ya right up!

Really tho, if ya want wood that bad, call the locals and tell them, they may bring it to you. I have several wood junkies around town that have areas that I can dump in. Saves me fuel for running it to the main site and if it helps heat a home, I am good with that. Just be careful, some guys will dump whatever when givin a chance, you may find a mountain of chips and pine logs!

We used to throw the crap wood in the ditch and it was always all gone within a day or two..... think people who had a sugar camp up the road used it in their arch to boil sap. It was junk, spruce, pine, silver maple, willow. All the hard maple and oak found its way to my house for the fireplace!

I had a spot that I was dumping FREE wood for a guy and one day about 1/3 the load was yellow pine and he called me and raised cane that he can't SELL this crap and for me to come pick it up, he never got another single piece and I'll pay to dump it before he gets anymore, you got to take the bad with the good sometimes when it's free....

Sounds like my late brother in law.....dropped off a load of free mixed wood that was prolly 1/4 pine, the rest sugar maple, from a friend's lot I was helping to clear in Petawawa. The pine actually burn quite nicely in the fireplace, few sparks etc. My sister phoned me up the next day and told me to come and pick up only the pine, Mike did not want it. Needless to say I did not , in fact told her she could put it out in the trash one piece at a time. The guy could be an incredible jerk at times, he was just on a different social and intellectal level than the rest of us I guess.

Really made me laugh when I spent a winter in Kamloops with my late Uncle who had an acreage, and all there was to burn there was lodgepole pine, and burn it he did in the furnace........it dripped what looked like coke syrup out of it when the fire really got going. Gawd that house was hot!!!!!

I guess some people don't realize how good they have it. I'm not a fan of pine, but if you're mixing it w/ good ####, no point in making a fuss.

That pine would be real handy when the "firewood mooching" relatives come around in the spring, looking for a trunk load of free firewood (campfires).

Like I said it did not spark much, and it was good to get a bed of coals for adding a couple big chunks of maple.

I'll accept the "stupid" part. But that analogy is a bit over the top.

I worked through college: One job was in a grocery store, min wage, free food. That was the deal. I washed dishes in a resturant, below min wage but the food was still free . Win win for all.

You better believe when I started with this tree bull#### I made sure if I wanted logs I got em... or I would have stayed home.

No need to pay for your wood ever.... all you have to do is coordinate with a few pro tree crews and show up on time with a large heavy duty trailer (20ft tandem 7k axles). most will load the wood for you to avoid liability of you getting hurt on their job site.

from your point of view, wood is valuable to you. from the tree company's point of view, it cost $$$ in fuel, equipment and man hours to haul the wood off for disposal. By you hauling off all the large wood. either tree crew will make more $$ from job and/or bid job lower by eliminating cost to haul off wood. this is a Win, Win scenario.

you've got to earn tree crew's respect before they will allow you one their job site.
if you don't show up, then that costs them more time to get their trailer on site.

once you hook up with a few good folks, they will keep you in more wood than you can burn.

I’m paying $300 a cord for firewood. I’m constantly getting ripped off and the #### is so green I can’t keep it lit in my wood stove!!

I’m not an arborist and I’ve only felled two trees in my entire lifetime (under perfect conditions with minimum liability – i.e. edge of a corn field). But I’m young, healthy, and have one hell of a strong back. I can put in a good 6/8 hours; I was a brick laborer for 4 years.

Do you think a tree service company would let me work as a general laborer on the weekends for free? Yes, for free... I’ll work my ass off and not collect a dime. If I could scrounge up a cord each weekend I’m saving $300 off the rip.

I would take the bucked rounds as payment. So, am I off my rocker?? Scrounging firewood off Craigslist is also manual labor...

Now that ####ing made my day!!

I actually had a dish washing job at a local sports bar when I was 14. It was under minimum wage BUT I was paid cash and I could eat for free...that's a true story

You better believe I'll be calling around come Monday. Not sure how to break the ice over the phone though.

I've been looking around for a good used tandem axle trailer.

Thanks for the input, I'll think this is best method and seems to be the most popular idea amongst all the posts I've read today.

Hello!
Tired of paying for fire wood, huh?
Maybe volunteer at the grocery store for free food and volunteer at the gas station for free gas. Yup, stupid.
Jeff

Good post,Biggie! Shucks, if you lived out here, I could give you all the euc and alder you could ever want for free. Just let me dump it at your place and if there is a little trash in it, I am sorry. Anyway, I think you would find this common anywhere and I bet there are guy's looking to dump some wood free. We had a truck load of euc that cost $600.00 to dump.
Jeff

Shouldn't you go back to your room?
so which is it Jeff?
I'm wondering if you're bi-polar or something... seems to me that every time you post something, it makes you look like a fool.
The kid wants firewood, and is willing to work for it. How is that so bad?
I don't really want your answers on these questions.. I already have them.
From the looks of your facebook page, you're a little too old to be letting your alligator mouth overload your little lizard ass!
One would think you would have learned how to act after all those years you have lived.
I'm almost blown away by the way you conduct yourself in public.... you would surely be humbled and made to eat your words(the garbage that comes out of your mouth), in my general occupied area.
Maybe I'm wrong.. maybe you're not such a prick, but I can't tell by your posts.

You would not believe how much you have humbled me! Thank you!

I doubt any of this would fit into your routines. The last thing an operation like yours needs is wood scroungers on your jobsites so don't be to humble. You answered from your point of veiw which if I was answering from I probably would have said the same thing.

Probably? No. Definatley. I wouldn't have a guy on the job paying him only in wood either. Its just not enough for either of us to pledge allegiance to. The wood is what's known as a fringe benefit.

How to break the ice? Jess call up and say " Yo Bubba! Hows bout some wood!"

I'm guessing you missed the point.
I never said it was a good thing to have someone on your jobsite collecting wood, and/or getting in the way of things, subjecting themselves to the dangers of tree work...
I never said to let the guy be a liability.
Sounds to me like his confidence came from somewhere... I don't doubt he is strong and smart.
Too bad the rest of our country don't learn from his work ethics... I bet he would be a great helper... maybe he would be a better tree worker than some here that claim to be such.
His willingness and drive speaks volumes.
I would not mind helping him... dropping him a big load of wood that may have costed me a couple hundred bucks to dump otherwise... at the same time allowing him to make a buck and keeping someone warm for the winter. win, win, win.
Or keep him desperate to keep his bills paid and/or keep warm.
In which case, at some point he could go the other way and turn criminal... killing you and your family for your pay, food, wood, etc.
Imagine you made this guy turn to this... because you were too high on your horse to see the good in his objective...
way to help your brother! just saying.

Now that ####ing made my day!!

I actually had a dish washing job at a local sports bar when I was 14. It was under minimum wage BUT I was paid cash and I could eat for free...that's a true story

That's nothing! When I was 16 I had a job as a barback in a Philly nightclub. This crazy 26 year old punk rock bartender chick with crazy ass red hair and chicken bones around her neck decides she wants a hunk outta me. She got it. I was all tore up, she pulverized my face :tongue2:, ripped my chest and back open:eek:uttahere2: and bought me breakfast:msp_tongue:... all summer! Taking a piss hurt and it was aimed at the wall.

When I was 18 I had a job at a car wash in Tucson. They gave me a loincloth and a rope, told me to swing out and wash the ladie's car. So I did. They said i was just what they were looking for. I said " same here". Hey, for 4.25 and hour plus, uh, umm, tips I didn't think it was a bad deal.

In Pittsburgh I had a job in an old steel mill. That wasn't very much fun in comparison but for all I had to go through with all my jobs at least my student loans are paid off.

You guys wanna hear about when i was bike messenger? I tell ya, being the only one in the elevator half naked and dripping sweat can sure get a girl thinking.

it is what it is

It is what its been made to be... and it can be made into something else. No, i don't think it wise to barter in with wage earning pros. Got to keep the playing field level as possible there. Dude did put a fair deal on the table; he will work for wood. But its been made into something not as simple as that for many of us. Not to say its not possible but in Jeff's and some other's niche? Nah, you have to be on the books just like the rest of the team. Its better just to load a guy's trailer and send him on his way. If it made sense to go to a tree company and work for just wood then we'd all be doing it.

In fact, Jeff ( and others) were actually helping dude out with what they said. He asked if he could be construed as a dumb ass if he went and worked at a tree company for wood and they told him the truth. Instead of saying " sure come on, be my sucker" they told him how to get it for free and ya can't beat that. The last thing we want is for someone to break his hump doing our work for some measly firewood.

A little different senerio: There is this company around here that just puts the clients address on CL and tells whoever to go get the wood right from the property. Really!:msp_ohmy:

Look at my sig; I don't own or buy cheap Home Depot "WildThing" specials. Yes, I have a P.O.S. Chinese made Blue Max, but that is my loaner saw (long story). No one other than myself uses my Stihl or Husky saws.

I have the land and I can handle anything up to 50" in diameter.

I would pay someone to dump grapple loads on my property.

Aaaalllll righty then.
I wasn't talking about you in particular.
But since you insist ,send me your address and I'll start shipping you all the wood you want PDQ.

Of course you have to pay S&H:hmm3grin2orange:

Please tell me you're kidding. How about personal responsibility. If he kills someone because he's broke, that's no ones fault but his, period. I doubt I'd feel bad for not hooking him up. If he wants to be a low-life scumbag, that's his business, but it ain't nobodys fault. Made the guy turn to killing? WTF?!? Imagine he went and worked for the money, and spent it, and actually stimulated the economy. God forbid he get a job. McDonald's is always hiring.
