I got the go ahead on an orchard job today. 600 7-8 year old semi-dwarf apples. The money isn't great @$4 each but it sure will be nice to finish December in the black rather than deep in the red.

Mike, I thought about starting the thread....."Why I'm charging $4"

Brian, I'll actually make more than 4-5 cuts on a lot of them but they'll be secateur cuts. (Why'd we adopt a silly French word in our industry? I'll be using the PRUNING SNIPS.:p ) No clean up. Just the Silky, loppers and snips. Nice quiet work. Zero climbing. 1-5 minutes per tree.

Oh-I don't start it 'til Monday so it is a December job.

I did the same thing once to a $hitload of Crepe Myrtles and Bradford pears. At $12 apiece we had to fertilize and mulch them. This was around '94.

It was fun. We made a little change.

.

What is a secatuer cut  I've never heard of this one before. Must be a local term.

Secateurs are tools. aka Pruning snips/hand snips. I was describing the size of cut rather than a style/technique.

If 3 of these trees were in a customer's front yard I'd charge $65 for the 3 including clean-up. The orchard situation is different. 600 trees all in rows. The price per tree has to be low to get it but I can hit a rhythm and have fun while churning them out.

My first tree job ever was pruning in a pomelo orchard in Israel. Nice quiet mellow work, easy to hit that rhythm, ends up in your dreams eventually. I've been hooked on trees since then.

Looks like I learned a little something today. I'll have to remeber that one for future reference.

Good luck on your job, even if you come up a little short on time the peace and quiet alone is worth it, the chance to be alone and do a little soul searching, doesn't come along to often and your getting paid to do it. I envy you on this one. :)
